The 20th and final stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 22, 2012 and led over 120 kilometers from Rambouillet to Paris on the circuit of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées . There were two mountain ratings in the 4th category.

The shortest stage of this year's tour led in a north-easterly direction through the Yvelines , Essonne and Hauts-de-Seine departments . The start was in the park of the Rambouillet castle . After crossing the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse regional nature park, the last two mountain classifications of the tour followed shortly after each other at Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse and Châteaufort . Drivers reach Paris via Viroflay and Boulogne-Billancourt . Following the right bank of the Seine , they reached the traditional circuit on the Champs-Élysées, which had to be traveled eight times. The intermediate sprint was carried out on the third lap .

Race course

153 of the original 198 drivers started. As usual on the last stage of a tour, the first half of the race was characterized by a very slow pace. The drivers took the time to talk to each other or pose for photos. Thomas Voeckler and Rubén Plaza secured the last mountain classifications. George Hincapie , the sole record holder with 17 Tour participations, led the field to the Champs-Élysées.

With the beginning of the first final round, the pace increased significantly. On the second lap, Danilo Hondo and Jens Voigt broke out of the field. They were able to gain a few seconds advantage, but were caught up again soon after the intermediate sprint classification. On the fourth lap there was another attempt to break away. Voigt was joined by Sébastien Minard , Lars Bak , Anders Lund , Marcus Burghardt , Bram Tankink , Maxim Iglinski , Nicolas Edet , Jean-Marc Marino , Aljaksandr Kuschynski , Rui Costa and Karsten Kroon .

The top group of twelve was able to pull out a maximum lead of 30 seconds, but fell apart on the seventh lap. Only Voigt, Minard and Costa remained at the top, who resisted being caught by the field. Finally, they were caught on the last lap, three kilometers from the finish. Team Sky took the lead to start the sprint for Mark Cavendish . He was able to prevail by one bike length ahead of Peter Sagan and won the final stage of the tour for the fourth time in a row.
