Tchaikovsky ( Russian Чайковский ) is a town in the Perm region in Russia . It has 82,895 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
geography
The city is located in the extreme southwest of the Perm region, 325km from the capital of Perm away, near the border with the republic of Udmurtia . The closest towns are Votkinsk (32 km north) and Sarapul (38 km southwest), both in Udmurtia.
The Kama flows through Tchaikovsky, and to the north of it, at the confluence with the Saigatka , forms the Votkinsk reservoir . Due to the location of the city between the Kama in the west, the reservoir in the north and the Saigatka in the east, which is enlarged by the damming, the urban area of Tchaikovsky resembles a peninsula.
history
The city was founded in 1955 on the site of a former village called Saigatka. The reason for the city's foundation was the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Kama, in the course of which the Votkinsk reservoir was also formed. The power plant was completed in 1965 and is mainly used to supply energy to the nearby Udmurt region and the southern Perm region.
The city was named after the important composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky , who was born nearby in Votkinsk .
