Vidra (outdated Vidra de Jos ; Hungarian Alsóvidra or Kisaranyos ) is a Romanian municipality in the district of Alba in the Transylvania region .

Geographical location

Location of the municipality of Vidra in the Alba district

The municipality of Vidra is located with its 39 smaller villages and hamlets (between one and ten kilometers from the municipality) in the north-west of the Alba district in the Bihor Mountains in the historic Motzenland . In the center of the Apuseni Mountains (Munții Apuseni) , on the lower reaches of the Arieșul Mic - a source river of the Arieș - and the county road (Drum județean) DJ 762, the place Vidra is about 15 kilometers west of Câmpeni (Topesdorf) ; the district capital Alba Iulia (Karlsburg) is about 98 kilometers (62 km as the crow flies) to the southeast.

history

According to reports by J. Ackner (1856), V. Christescu (1929), I. Marțian (1920) and others, gold panning was found on both sides of the Arieș river in the area of the place Vidra.

The place Vidra, one of the oldest settlements in Motzenland, was first mentioned in 1595. At that time he belonged to the Topánfalva district (today Câmpeni ) of Torda-Aranyos County in the Principality of Transylvania . Later the villages in the valley of the Arieșului Mic were grouped under the name Râul Mic . Until 1924 - on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Avram Iancu - the municipality of Vidra de Sus (today Avram Iancu ) also belonged to Vidra. The residents of Vidra mainly dealt with agriculture (especially cattle breeding) and wood processing.

The municipality of Vidra has the second largest number of villages in Romania (39) after the municipality of Cornereva (40) in the Caraș-Severin district .

population

In 1850, 3,531 inhabitants lived in the area of today's municipality. 3,505 were Romanians and 26 Roma . In 1941 the largest population was registered with 5,136. Because of the poor living conditions - difficult access, no electricity / water, severe winters - many families left their homes in the early 1950s. At the 2002 census, 1,964 people lived in the municipality, 1,963 of them Romanians and one Hungarian . In addition, in 1880, 1992 and 2002 one each, in 1890 and 1900 four and in 1910 three residents referred to themselves as Hungarians, in 1880 one as German , in 1966 one as Serb . The highest number of Roma (50) was registered in 1930 (7 in 1956 and 10 in 1977).
