the current sports studio is a weekly sports program of the ZDF late Saturday night. The broadcast is repeated in the night from Saturday to Sunday on the partner station 3sat . It first aired on August 24, 1963. From 1999 to 2005 the program was called ZDF SPORTstudio .
Sport on ZDF
Since the ZDF had to start broadcasting with modest means in 1963, an attempt was made to particularly force the audience hits, which included sport in particular. So they started with an unusually large sports editorial team of 42 employees, which actually managed to outbid ARD for a long time in terms of viewing participation. This project benefited the newly introduced soccer Bundesliga , which made soccer much more attractive with its point system. For this purpose, a tailor-made program was created.
For the package of Bundesliga broadcasting rights on which the program is based, ZDF will pay between 88 and 92 million euros for the four seasons 2013/14 to 2016/17, according to the negotiating circles. The broadcaster does not provide any information on the amount of expenditure. According to ZDF, the 46 to 48 programs, each lasting an average of 75 minutes, cost an average of around 150,000 euros per issue each year.
Structure of the program
concept
The first broadcast of the current sports studio was broadcast on August 24, 1963, the first match day of the Bundesliga. It was true that other sports were also involved - especially when there was no play - but a large part of the program was always football . This usually started the show, only Harry Valérien sometimes started with a marginal sport .
In the early days, the program was created while it was being broadcast. Because ZDF had no recording stations at all, all 16mm films had to be brought from the stadiums to Eschborn near Frankfurt am Main, where they had to be developed and edited. The reporter also had to rush to Eschborn because he could only speak the live commentary there. One always acted according to the principle: Better an interesting breakdown than a boring program. This procedure was always shown to the audience so that it could tremble with them.
Opening credits
The theme music "Up to date" was composed by Thomas Reich and recorded with the Big Band by Max Greger . Originally the program always started with a station clock , followed by a hand-turned advertising column on which the topics of the program were posted. In the meantime, a modernized station clock was used. A computer-animated clock is now being used. The live audience applauds the moderator as he begins.
Goal wall
A trademark of the current sports studio is the goal wall , which goes back to a suggestion by the moderator Werner Schneider and has been in use since 1964. The goal wall was invented by Heinrich Klein . Initially, the two holes were on the bottom left and top right, and they only had a diameter of 50 cm (some sources speak of 49 cm). The version of the goal wall, which is still known today, has existed since 1966 (W: 2.70 m, H: 1.83 m, holes at the top left and bottom right with a diameter of 55 cm). Attempts had been made in the 1970s to remove them from the program, but audience protests led to a quick reintroduction. So far no studio guest has been able to achieve six hits with three attempts per hole. Even five hits are extremely rare.
- Günter Netzer scored five hits for the first time on May 18, 1974. This later also succeeded Rudi Völler , Günter Hermann , Reinhard Saftig , Matthias Becker , Rolf Fringer , Frank Pagelsdorf , Frank Rost and Inka Grings .
- Franz Beckenbauer have scored a maximum of four hits so far. Comedian Mike Krüger , soccer player Aylin Yaren , Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton , Oliver Bierhoff , Jérôme Boateng , Michael Ballack , René Adler , Christian Träsch , Hans-Joachim Watzke and Oliver Kahn scored four hits .
- In the broadcast on September 8, 2018, in which Oliver Kahn scored four times, the studio shooter Thilo Goossen from SV Drochtersen / Assel also scored four hits to a draw of 4: 4.
- On August 19, 2006, broadcast from the Aachen riding stadium on the occasion of the World Equestrian Championships, Ludger Beerbaum scored two hits with riding boots.
- Franz Beckenbauer again managed to shoot the ball from a wheat beer glass into the lower hole in the goal wall.
- The soccer world champion Fatmire Bajramaj scored two hits in the lower hole in pumps with 7-centimeter heels on October 6, 2007 .
- The national handball player Florian Kehrmann shot a man's glasses off the head because the hard shot ricocheted off the edge of the goal wall box.
- Michael Rensing from 1. FC Köln shot seven times on the goal wall on Holy Saturday 2012 because the sixth shot failed. Moderator Sven Voss commented on Rensing's approach with the words “What's going on now?” Before that, Hans-Jörg Criens had shot the goal wall seven times in the 1980s because he first mistakenly shot four times on the bottom hole, whereupon moderator Karl Senne allowed three more shots to go into the upper hole.
- In 1975 the ice hockey player Lorenz Funk senior actually hit six times in six attempts on the ZDF goal wall. However, this did not happen during the current sports studio, but as part of a ZDF event at the international radio exhibition . Then Funk was invited to the current sports studio, where he did not convert any of his six attempts.
- On April 1, 1967, the ZDF chauffeur Arno Butterweck apparently scored six hits in six attempts on the show. According to the date, however, this result was a forgery by ZDF.
Guests
With so far (as of August 24, 2013) 56 visits, Franz Beckenbauer leads the guest list. Rudi Völler and Otto Rehhagel share second place with 35 visits each. This is followed by Felix Magath (34) and Erich Ribbeck (30).
Name change
The original broadcast title The current sports studio was changed to ZDF SPORTstudio on December 4, 1999 , and the broadcast slot was permanently moved to 11 p.m. in 2004. The reason for this: Up until now the broadcast had always been live, which was expressed by the word “aktuell” in the title. From now on it was only a matter of a program that had been previously recorded for reasons of cost. As of August 6, 2005, the program was usually broadcast live under the name of the current sport studio on the old slot at 10 p.m. If the broadcast started after 10 p.m., the current sports studio was broadcast with a time delay in exceptional cases. Since September 11, 2010, the sports studio has been recorded live on tape on Saturdays from around 10:30 p.m. and broadcast from 11 p.m.
Special events
During the live broadcasts, there were always special incidents. For example, a chimpanzee tore the wig off the head of the wife of former Olympic swimming champion and Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmüller in one program . The interview with boxer Norbert Grupe also went down in history. He remained silent about Rainer Günzler's questions , but at the end thanked him in a friendly way for his interest in boxing.
The highest-ranking studio guest in terms of protocol was the then incumbent Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker on July 13, 1985 .

Some moderators were previously competitive athletes, for example figure skaters ( Rudi Cerne ), footballers ( Michael Steinbrecher ) or athletes ( Wolf-Dieter Poschmann and Bernd Heller ).
On February 3, 1973, Carmen Thomas was the first woman to host a German sports program. Two further events in German television history are connected with this: In her second program, she was able to show the issue of Bild on the Sunday of the following day at the beginning of the program and read out the criticism of her program from it. However, on July 21, 1973, the slip of the tongue "Schalke 05" made her much better known, about which she is addressed almost weekly even today. More than thirty years later, at the home game against FC Hansa Rostock on August 28, 2004 , she officially apologized to all Schalke fans in the arena for her lapse.

Especially in the 1970s, there were various celebrities who were one or more times moderator or co-moderator in the current sports studio . These are: the speed skater Erhard Keller (four times), Kurt Lavall (1923–1977) (three times), Walther Schmieding , Alfons Spiegel , Willi Krämer (1926–2015) (twice each), Jochen Bouhs / Volker Tietze , Udo Hartwig , Robert Seeger , Dieter Thomas Heck , Frank Elstner , Kurt Jeschko (once each) and, from 1975, several times the Austrian cabaret artist Werner Schneyder , who also presented the cabaret retrospect that he designed, Das Ausfallene Sport-Studio , from 1978 to 1990 .
