The village of Ålen is located along the [[Gaula River (Sør-Trøndelag)|Gaula River]] and the [[Rørosbanen]] railway line. It is about {{convert|15|km}} southeast of the village of [[Haltdalen]]. The village is just northwest of the village of [[Renbygda]]. On the east side of the village is [[Ålen Church]].

The municipality of Ålen was established in 1855 when it was split from the municipality of [[Holtålen|Holtaalen]]. Initially, Ålen had a population of 1,487. An uninhabited part of Ålen was moved to [[Røros]] in 1875. The remaining part of Holtålen changed its name to [[Haltdalen]] in 1937. On 1 January 1972, Ålen was merged with Haltdalen to re-form the old municipality of Holtålen. Prior to the merger Ålen municipality had a population of 1,944. 15th of August 2011 Ålen experienced a big flood. This was the lagest flood since 1940. More than one area was isolated, among them were the villages center and Anegrenda. The flood arrived during the night, by the time people woke up in the morning they were trapped in their homes, and in some cases it was neccesary to use a rescue helicopter. No one alerted about the flood, but in that day about 50 mm to 80 mm of rain came down in Ålen. There was a lot of damage on homes, cars, roads and public buildings. Most of the stores "downtown" were flooded with water over a meter up on the walls. The river was flowing over all the bridges, and made it impossible to drive over with any vehicle. The only suspention bridge in the area was twisted and totaly wrecked. Ålen planned to open the new footballcourt two days after the flood, but this was of course also flooded. Ålen got money from the insurance and was able to rebuild the village to the better.
The municipality (originally the [[prestegjeld|parish]]) is named Ålen, after an old name for the area. The name is the definite singular form of the [[Old Norse]] word {{wikt-lang|non|áll}} which means "[[eel]]". Ålen is a former municipality in the old Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The 718-square-kilometre (277 sq mi) former municipality existed from 1855 until 1972. It encompassed the southeastern half of what is now the municipality of Holtålen in Trøndelag county. The administrative centre was the village of Renbygda (also known as Ålen) where Ålen Church is located.[3]

The parish of Ålen (historically spelled Aalen) was established as a civil municipality in 1855 when it was split off from the municipality of Holtaalen. Initially, Ålen had a population of 1,487. (The now smaller Holtaalen municipality later changed its name to Haltdalen in 1937.) In 1875, an uninhabited part of Ålen was moved to the neighboring municipality of Røros. On 1 January 1972, the municipality of Ålen was merged with the neighboring municipality of Haltdalen to make a new municipality called Holtålen, bringing back to use a name from an earlier municipality. Prior to the merger Ålen municipality had a population of 1,944.[4]

The municipality (originally the parish) is named Ålen, after an old name for the area. The name is the definite singular form of the Old Norse word áll which means "eel". This name likely refers to the winding valley in which the main village centre is located.[3][5] On 21 December 1917, a royal resolution enacted the 1917 Norwegian language reforms. Prior to this change, the name was spelled Aalen with the digraph "Aa", and after this reform, the name was spelled Ålen, using the letter Å instead.[6][7]

While it existed, this municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, unemployment, social services, zoning, economic development, and municipal roads. During its existence, this municipality was governed by a municipal council of elected representatives, which in turn elected a mayor.[8]
