The Austrian Ice Hockey League 1996/97 was played with six clubs. Champion was defending champion VEU Feldkirch for the fourth time in a row and for the eighth time in the club's history , who prevailed against the EC KAC in the final .

Participant field and mode

After the EV Zeltweg was relegated for sporting reasons and the EHC Lustenau for financial reasons after the previous season, only six teams competed for the championship title in the current season. The Alpine League , which had been suspended in the previous year in favor of a European League Cup, was played again in front of the state league (see Alpine League 1996/97 ), with the three best clubs - VEU Feldkirch , EC KAC and EC VSV - being seeded for the semi-finals. For the fourth semifinal place (against Alpine League winners Feldkirch), the remaining three clubs carried out a round of hope with a round trip during the group phase of the Alpine League. The semi-finals and finals were held in best-of-seven mode.
