1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1958
The fourth 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also the 4th International ADAC 1000 km race, sports car world championship race on the Nürburgring , took place on June 1, 1958 on the Nordschleife and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
Before the 1000 km race in Germany , three world championship races had already been held, which ended with overall wins for Scuderia Ferrari . At the opening race of the season, the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , Peter Collins and Phil Hill crossed the finish line as winners in a Ferrari 250TR / 58 . In the following 12 hours of Sebring , the duo won again. Ferrari also won the Targa Florio with a 250TR / 58; this time with the driver pairing Luigi Musso and Olivier Gendebien .
The race
Ferrari came to the Eifel as the superior championship leader in the brand world championship . The later winning team Aston Martin had not yet been able to achieve a world championship point. The Scuderia Ferrari came with four factory Testa Rossa, which were driven in the race by the following teams: Mike Hawthorn / Peter Collins (# 4), Luigi Musso / Phil Hill (# 5), Wolfgang Seidel / Gino Munaron (# 6 ) and Wolfgang von Trips / Olivier Gendebien (# 7). The Scuderia reported a fifth car for the Swedish racing team Svezia Oerebro. The Ferrari 750 Monza was driven by Gunnar Carlsson and the Finn Carl-Otto Bremer .
Aston Martin reported three DBR1 / 300s for drivers Roy Salvadori , Carroll Shelby , Tony Brooks , Stuart Lewis-Evans , Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham . Brabham, the partner of Stirling Moss, had not driven a meter on the Nordschleife prior to his deployment in 1958.
The team leaders at Porsche and Borgward were hoping for success in the class of sports cars up to 1.5 liters. Porsche wanted to start the race with three cars, two 718 RSK and one 550 A RS . The 718 RSK with the starting number 22 of Giorgio Scarlatti , Richard von Frankenberg and Carel Godin de Beaufort had an accident during training, so that a replacement car had to be brought to the track that night. Borgward had meticulously prepared for the race. On the Nürburgring alone, test kilometers were covered with the revised Borgward RS 1500. The cockpits of the three registered racing cars were shared by Giulio Cabianca , Hans Herrmann , Joakim Bonnier and Fritz Jüttner .
The course of the race
On race day 150,000 spectators came to the Nordschleife to see a dominating Stirling Moss. Moss took the lead immediately on his DBR1 / 300, ahead of his two team-mates Tony Brooks and Roy Salvadori. Behind them followed the two Porsche drivers Harry Schell and Jean Behra . The fastest in training, Mike Hawthorn, got off to a bad start and found himself in a bunch of slow vehicles. Moss stayed at the wheel of the Aston Martin most of the time, with Brabham only taking over the wheel twice for a short time. Peter Collins managed to take the lead for a short time. At the finish, Moss and Brabham were almost four minutes ahead of Hawthorn and Collins' Ferraris. It was followed by three more factory Ferraris.
While Porsche celebrated the hoped-for class victory through Richard von Frankenberg, Carel Godin de Beaufort and Edgar Barth in the Porsche 550 A RS, all three Borgward were out.
Fatal finale
As in previous years, a special rule applied at the Nürburgring in 1958 if you wanted to win one of the advertised classes. In any case, a class winner must have covered the 44 laps of the race winner and had another hour to do so after the checkered flag fell. As a result, several vehicles continued the race. Also Erwin Bauer remained after he had been checkered, at full speed on the track. He shared the cockpit of a Ferrari 250TR with the Austrian Gotfrid Köchert . Bauer had no chance of a class win and should have simply overlooked the checkered flag. A few kilometers after the start and finish, he collided with a slowly moving car, resulting in a fatal accident.
