AC / DC ([ ˈeɪsiː ˈdiːsiː ]; English abbreviation for " AC / DC ") is an Australian hard rock band formed in 1973 by Scottish- born brothers Angus and Malcolm Young . They are among the pioneers of hard rock , but the band itself always describes their music as rock 'n' roll .
The line-up of the band changed even before the release of the first album High Voltage in 1975, when singer Dave Evans was replaced by Bon Scott in the fall of 1974 . In 1979 the band recorded their very successful album Highway to Hell . Shortly thereafter, lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on February 19, 1980. The group was then on the verge of disbanding, until former Geordie singer Brian Johnson was hired as Scott's replacement. Only a little later the band released the album Back in Black . With over 50 million records sold, this album is now the second best-selling album in the world and the most successful hard rock album to date.
AC / DC is fourth on the VH1 list of the “100 best hard rock bands” and seventh on MTV's list of “best heavy metal bands of all time” . In 2004 the band was voted number 72 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best artists. AC / DC has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 69 million copies in the United States.
history
Name and background
The brothers Angus and Malcolm came up with the band name after the sister of the Australian brothers, Margaret, saw the abbreviation on the back of their sewing machine and said it was a good band name. AC and DC are the abbreviations for alternating current and direct current, respectively . In the music field, a joint composition by Benny Goodman , Charlie Christian and Lionel Hampton AC / DC Current was named as early as the 1930s . In addition, the term should probably show the powerful, rough music of the band and at the same time the love for the music of the brothers. In Australia the band is also known as "Acca Dacca".
Margaret Young also suggested that Angus Young wear his old school uniform on stage, as he had gotten into the habit of wearing the uniform after school for the rest of the day when he was a teenager. To this day, Young wears bespoke uniforms in different colors at almost all AC / DC appearances. With this extravagant outfit, he became the visual signature of the band. Young's habit of occasionally playing lying down also goes back to one of his early appearances when he tripped over a cable. To overcome the embarrassment, he continued to play while lying down. Later on, the uniform brought an additional benefit: Young was one of the first guitarists to use a radio transmitter because the wiring prevented him from making lively performances. Since the necessary technology could not be accommodated in today's standard bodypacks, the transmitter was quickly built into a school satchel that Young could strap onto his back during the performance.
Malcolm, Angus and George Young are native Scots, moved to Sydney with the rest of the family in 1963 . George was the first to learn to play the guitar and played in the band The Easybeats , which was well known in Australia in the 1960s. Malcolm followed his older brother and played guitar with the band "The Velvet Underground" (not to be confused with the New York band The Velvet Underground ). They were employed by the Australian and New Zealand label "Albert Productions".
The beginnings (1973–1974)
In November 1973, Angus and Malcolm began to put the band members together and hired drummer Colin Burgess , bassist Larry Van Kriedt and singer Dave Evans . AC / DC first appeared in a club in Sydney called "Checkers" on New Year's Eve 1973.
At the time of the first concerts, Angus Young was not yet of legal age, so that he had to be driven home after the concerts and was not allowed to participate in the obligatory excessive drinking. In February 1974, the first single Can I Sit Next to You Girl? / Rockin 'in the Parlor with singer Dave Evans was recorded, which was released on July 22 of the same year in Australia and New Zealand.
The Bon Scott Era (1974–1980)
After Dave Evans was replaced by Bon Scott in the fall of 1974 due to discrepancies with the rest of the band , the style crystallized that is still unmistakable today. The much older Scott previously sang on “The Spektors” (1964–1966), “The Valentines” (1966–1970) and “Fraternity” (1970–1973).
In 1975 Phil Rudd joined the band as drummer and Mark Evans as bassist, replacing the respective members. The band quickly made a name for themselves through extensive tours in Australia. The first international successes were soon achieved, and the group released the album High Voltage (1976), a combination of the albums High Voltage (different version) and TNT, which were only released in Australia
After AC / DC signed a contract with Atlantic Records in the spring of 1976 , the group began touring the USA and Great Britain. Within a few years AC / DC produced several successful albums, such as Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976), which was only released in the USA in 1981, and Let There Be Rock (1977). By then the band had found their signature sound, consisting mainly of Malcolm Young's punchy and rough played power chords , Angus Young's blues-influenced lead guitar and Bon Scott's vocals, which were determined by the use of the head voice .
After Let There Be Rock , Mark Evans left the band because of a disagreement with Angus Young and was replaced by Cliff Williams , who played bass until 2016. With If You Want Blood You've Got It , AC / DC also released a live album with Bon Scott.
When the punk wave started rolling in Great Britain in 1977 , many previously successful rock bands plunged into a crisis. The popularity of AC / DC suffered comparatively little damage, partly because punk was directed against two developments in rock music that AC / DC could not blame: toothlessness and excessiveness. The declared target of the punk movement were established rock bands such as Genesis , Pink Floyd , Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin . Compared to these groups, AC / DC sounded almost as raw and unaffected as a punk band.
The next album was Highway to Hell . The first recordings were lost, which is why the responsible producer was replaced by another. Some of these recordings were later rediscovered and published on the Bonfire Box. When the album was released in 1979, it reached number eight on the British album chart and stayed there for 32 weeks.
Bon Scott's death
Bon Scott passed away shortly after Highway to Hell was published . On Tuesday, February 19, 1980, the following news was broadcast on BBC London radio: “This afternoon the body of AC / DC singer Ronald Belford Scott was found in the southern part of Dulwich. As announced by the AC / DC management, Bon Scott died of alcohol poisoning and as a result of suffocation from vomit in the car of his friend Alistair Kinnear. Bon Scott was 33 years old. AC / DC are in London to work on the recordings of the next LP. ”It was also said that all group activities had been put on hold until further notice.
His body was transferred to Australia in February. On March 1st, 1980 he was buried with his family and his band colleagues.
The Brian Johnson Era (since 1980)
The 1980s
Since Scott had died in the middle of recording a new studio album, quite a bit of material had already been composed, so that the album Back in Black could be released after a short time after the engagement of the new singer Brian Johnson . Back in Black is the most successful AC / DC album to date and the best-selling album by a band with over 49 million copies sold. In the US alone it was over the counter over 22 million times.
In 1981 the album For Those About to Rock was released . The volume at which the songs were recorded prompted music critic Tom Graves to later write the review: “This is another masterpiece from the Brian Johnson era. The title song became the band's trademark and is played at the concerts with all pyrotechnic bells and whistles. It is a must for anyone who doesn't mind risking total deafness. "
Before the production of the album Flick of the Switch , Phil Rudd retired due to mental health problems and alcohol addiction. His successor was Simon Wright , with whom the following album Fly on the Wall was produced.
In 1986 AC / DC contributed the soundtrack to the Stephen King film " Rhea M - It began without warning " ("Maximum Overdrive") : Who Made Who . Although there were only three new songs on the record, it reached a chart position and marked the end of the creative trough the band had been in since For Those About to Rock .
The next album, Blow Up Your Video , was re-recorded with their first producers, George Young and Harry Vanda. The single Heatseeker made it to number 12 on the British charts in January 1988. In the same year AC / DC were inducted into the newly formed ARIA Hall of Fame .
During the Blow Up Your Video tour , Malcolm Young had to undergo four months of alcohol withdrawal ; meanwhile, his nephew Stevie Young represented him at the concerts. Also in 1990 Simon Wright left the band and was replaced by the former drummer of " Manfred Mann's Earth Band ", Chris Slade .
The 1990s
After the 1988 tour was over, AC / DC used 1989 to write and rehearse new songs. The group made their comeback with the release of The Razors Edge in 1990. Since preferred producer George Young was unable to schedule the album, Bruce Fairbairn, who had also worked with Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi , produced the album in Canada in the spring of that year . With this album and the hit single Thunderstruck , AC / DC returned to the rock stage and quickly achieved several platinum awards and top 10 placements in Europe, Australia and the USA.
When recording a new album, AC / DC rehearsed again with their former drummer Phil Rudd. When he was informed of this, Chris Slade left the band. 1995 Rudd joined AC / DC again. With this line-up, the band has since recorded four albums, Ballbreaker (1995), Stiff Upper Lip (2000), Black Ice (2008) and Rock or Bust (2014). While Ballbreaker found the style of the 1970s again, Stiff Upper Lip was accused of a certain monotony, which was expressed in the predominantly bluesy songs.
Stiff Upper Lip and Black Ice (2000-2013)
The highlight in the band's history was the inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland ( Ohio ) in March 2003. On this occasion played AC / DC Highway to Hell and You Shook Me All Night Long , along with Steven Tyler of Aerosmith , the also held the laudatory speech .
In 2003 AC / DC co-headlined with the Rolling Stones at several concerts in Europe and the USA.
The city of Melbourne in Australia honored the band's successes on October 1, 2004 with their own street name, ACDC Lane . This is near Swanston Street, where AC / DC recorded the video for It's a Long Way to the Top on a flatbed truck. The characteristic lightning bolt was also used on the street sign. There has also been a street called Calle de AC / DC in Leganés, Spain, since March 2, 2000 .
In April 2008, work on the successor to Stiff Upper Lip was officially confirmed. The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien. Mike Fraser was the sound engineer. The newspaper The Wall Street Journal reported that the new album in the US exclusively at Wal-Mart would be available and Sam's Club. The band also announced an 18-month world tour starting in October 2008. The tickets for the first European dates were offered for sale on October 10, 2008 from 9:00 p.m. on the CTS Eventim Internet platform and were sold out for the concerts in Germany within 12 minutes. The more than 300,000 tickets for the five stadium concerts in May 2009 were sold out within 77 minutes. In terms of the number of tickets sold, this is a world record.
The album Black Ice was officially released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on October 17th and worldwide on October 20th, 2008. The first single from this album - Rock 'n' Roll Train - was released on August 28, 2008. Black Ice made it straight to the top of the album charts in 29 countries.
During appearances during the Black Ice tour, the live DVD Live at River Plate , released in 2011, was created , at its premiere in London Angus Young revealed that a new album and a world tour were being planned. In 2013 the group celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Since 2014
Brian Johnson said in February 2014 that the band would hit the studio in May of that year. In addition, the band wants to play 40 shows as a subsequent band anniversary. These plans had to be postponed because a band member was seriously ill. On April 15, 2014, rumors arose that AC / DC was about to break up because Malcolm Young had suffered a stroke and was consequently unable to play the guitar. A day later, Brian Johnson denied the breakup of the band to the Daily Telegraph , and a statement was posted on the band's Facebook page that the band would continue to make music. In July it was announced that the band had finished recording an album. Malcolm Young was represented on the recordings by Stevie Young, the nephew of the Young brothers born in 1956. He already played a tour with the band in 1988 when Malcolm Young was on alcohol withdrawal.
On September 24, 2014, the band announced that Malcolm Young was suffering from dementia due to a stroke and had to leave the band for good. Steve Young took Malcom's place in the band from now on. In addition, the release date of the new album Rock or Bust ("Rock or go bust ") was announced, in which Malcolm Young was still involved as a songwriter. In November 2014, Angus Young and Brian Johnson announced that Phil Rudd, who had come into conflict with the New Zealand judiciary shortly after the end of the recordings of Rock or Bust , was not expected to return to AC / DC. On November 28, 2014, the album Rock or Bust was released. In February 2015, Chris Slade returned to AC / DC, replacing Phil Rudd as the band's permanent drummer. In the summer of 2015, the Rock or Bust tour began, which in 2015 made stops in European, North American and Australian stadiums. In February the band went on an indoor tour through the USA, which had to be canceled in March, as the singer Brian Johnson would otherwise have threatened permanent deafness. After long speculations about Johnson's successor, it was finally announced that Axl Rose would step in as a singer for the remaining concerts on the USA tour and for the summer tour in Europe.
In early July 2016, Cliff Williams announced that he would be leaving AC / DC after the current tour. This makes Angus Young the last remaining original member. Despite some headlines, after the end of the Rock or Bust tour in September 2016 there was still no official announcement as to whether AC / DC was planned to continue with Brian Johnson, Axl Rose or other musicians.
George Young passed away on October 22, 2017 . In addition to his own musical career, the oldest of the Young siblings worked behind the scenes in the early stages of the band.
A few weeks later, on November 18, 2017, co-founder and longtime guitarist Malcolm Young died in Australia as a result of his dementia at the age of 64.
successes
AC / DC has sold more than 150 million records . The 1978 live album If You Want Blood You've Got It was in the UK album chart for 58 consecutive weeks in 1978/79. Back in Black has been sold 21 million times in the US alone. In total, Back in Black was sold 50 million times, making it the second most successful album ever.
Hard rock generally received little attention during its heyday in the late 1970s through the 1980s, and whenever AC / DC was nominated for a Grammy, it was always other bands that received the award.
In 2010 AC / DC received a Grammy for the first time in the category "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the title War Machine from the album Black Ice , which was also nominated (in the category "Best Rock Album") . However, the album could not be against 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day prevail. At the Grammy Awards, Green Day singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong also admitted that he was heavily influenced by AC / DC:
"I love AC / DC […] If it wasn't for [AC / DC guitarist] Angus [Young], I wouldn't be playing guitar."
"I love AC / DC [...] If it wasn't for Angus [Young], I wouldn't be playing guitar."
The Rolling Stone listed AC / DC as 72nd of the 100 greatest musicians of all time .
