Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera
Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera (German: Academy of Fine Arts ) or Accademia di Brera is an art academy in Milan that was founded by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776. The academy is located together with the Pinacoteca di Brera and other cultural institutions in the Palazzo di Brera (Eng .: Palace of Brera ) in the Brera district of Milan .
The establishment of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere , the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense , the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera and a botanical garden went hand in hand with the establishment of the Academy . Giuseppe Piermarini , who in the same year received the first chair for architecture at the academy, was commissioned to design the ensemble of buildings .
In 1803, training at the academy was reformed as part of a general reorganization of artistic studies. A newly formed academic body, the consiglio accademico , consisting of 30 members, defined architecture, painting, sculpture, ornament , engraving , perspective , artistic anatomy and elements of classical figure theory as subjects of study.
In 1809 the facade of the church Chiesa di Santa Maria in Brera , built according to plans by Giovanni di Balduccio , had to give way to a structural extension of the academy.
During a visit to Napoleon III. in Milan in 1859 the bronze statue of Napoleone I was placed in the veste di Marte pacificatore in the middle of the courtyard. The work, originally commissioned by Eugène de Beauharnais as early as 1807, was cast in Rome.
In 1863 the archaeological collection became an independent museum and in 1882 the Pinacoteca di Brera gained organizational autonomy. In 1891 the architecture department was separated from the academy. In 1923 the school reform Riforma Gentile led to the establishment of a Liceo artistico. During this time, Adolfo Wildt headed the sculpture department. Lucio Fontana and Fausto Melotti were among his students. A chair for fresco painting was created for Achille Funi . In 1931 the architecture department was transferred to the Milan Polytechnic .
Antonio Bernocchi was the main financier for the reconstruction of the Accademia di Brera in Milan, which was hit by bombing during the First World War.
