The article contains a detailed account of the Argentine national soccer team for women at world championships . The Argentines have so far not been able to build on the successes of their male colleagues . They were only able to qualify for the women's World Cup finals three times and were last in the all-time table before the 2019 World Cup . In 2019, the first points were won through two draws and the last place in the table, which Ecuador now occupies, was left.

The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

The Argentines did not take part in the Sudamericano Femenino 1991 , which served as a qualification for the first women's World Cup.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Four years later Argentina was also interested in qualifying and took part in the Sudamericano Femenino 1995 in Brazil , which also served as a qualification for the 1995 World Cup. On January 10, 1995, they played their first FIFA-recognized international match in Minas Gerais, beating Ecuador 5-1 . In the second game they achieved their highest international win with a 12-0 win against Bolivia , but then lost 9-0 against defending champions Brazil . After a 1-0 win against Chile , they were second in the group and were allowed to play against Brazil again, but lost it 2-0 - after all, not as high as in the first game against the Brazilians. Since the South American teams were only entitled to one World Cup place, only Brazil went to the World Cup as CONMEBOL representative. Argentina also missed qualifying for the first women's soccer tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games , as only the eight best teams from the World Cup could qualify for it. There, CONMEBOL was also represented by Brazil, which, as the ninth-best team, benefited from the fact that the seventh-best team, England, was not allowed to compete in the Olympic Games.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

A second South American team had the chance to qualify for the third World Cup against a CONCACAF representative via the Pan American playoffs . For Sudamericano Femenino 1998 in Argentina , which again served as qualification , all 10 CONMEBOL members had registered, so that the game was played in two groups. Argentina used their home advantage and prevailed in their group with four wins against Bolivia (8: 0), Paraguay (3: 0), Uruguay (2: 1) and Ecuador (2: 0). In the semifinals, Peru was defeated on penalties and lost 7-1 to Brazil in the final. With that, Brazil qualified directly again. Argentina had to face Mexico in the Pan-American playoffs, but lost 3-1 and 3-2, which meant Mexico qualified for the first time. Argentina also missed the qualification for the women's soccer tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games , as only the seven best teams from the World Cup were able to qualify for it, alongside hosts Australia.

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. The qualification was held again as Sudamericano Femenino 2003 and this time the South American champion and the runner-up could qualify. Argentina first had to qualify for the final round in Peru with two wins against Paraguay (3-0) and Uruguay (8-0) at a tournament in Salta . There they lost 3-2 in their first game against Brazil, which only had to play in the last four. With a 3-2 win against Colombia and a 1-1 draw, Argentina became runner-up and qualified for the World Cup together with South American champions Brazil. But only Brazil qualified for the 2004 Olympics.

In the USA, Argentina met Japan in their first World Cup game and lost 6-0. Against Canada 's defeat coincided with 0: 3 then already less serious and against the eventual champions Germany succeeded Yanina Gaitan at 1: 6, after all, the first World Cup goal for Argentina. As the bottom of the group, the World Cup ended after three games for Argentina.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . In the Sudamericano Femenino 2006 , which again served as a qualification , the 10 CONMEBOL members initially played four teams in two groups of five for the final round. Argentina initially won the first four games, alternating close and high against Uruguay (2: 1), Chile (8: 0), Ecuador (1: 0) and Colombia (6: 0). The final round was reached and Argentina surprisingly came first ahead of Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, as Brazil could be defeated for the first time in the last game. Argentina went to the World Cup as South American champions and Brazil as runners-up. Argentina qualified for the women's soccer tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games , while Brazil only qualified through play-off games against Ghana.

In the finals, they met defending champions Germany in their first game and, with the active help of goalkeeper Vanina Correa, suffered the highest defeat in a World Cup game with 0:11, with Germany making the 10-1 Hungary against El Salvador at the World Cup Outdid men in 1982 . In the second game against Japan Romina Ferro was in goal and the game was then only lost 0-1. In the last game against England , however, she could not prevent the 1: 6. With that, Argentina said goodbye to the World Cup for 12 years.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The Argentines could not qualify for the World Cup in Germany . At the Sudamericano Femenino 2010 in Ecuador , three wins against Bolivia (3: 0), Chile (2: 1) and Peru (2: 0) as well as a 0: 1 defeat against the hosts survived the preliminary round and reached the final round . There, however, Brazil retaliated for the defeat four years earlier and won 4-0. After a 0-0 win against Chile, there was still hope of reaching the World Cup by beating Colombia in the last game if Chile did not win against Brazil. Brazil fulfilled its duty, but Argentina lost 1-0 to Colombia and for the first time against the Colombians. They then drove to the World Cup together with South American champions Brazil and were the second South American team to win a point even though they were the first team to fail. Argentina also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 2012 Olympics

2015 World Cup in Canada

Argentina also failed again in qualifying for the World Cup in Canada. At Sudamericano Femenino 2014 , only the first game against Chile was lost 0-1 in the preliminary round, but then followed three wins against Bolivia (6-0), Paraguay (1-0) and Brazil (2-0) as Brazil spared some regular players for the final round. In the final round, however, there was no more victory. A 0-0 win against Colombia was followed by a 0-0 win against Brazil, which meant that Brazil had already qualified for the World Cup. Argentina would have finished second with a big win against hosts Ecuador with a simultaneous heavy defeat for Colombia against Brazil. But it turned out differently: Brazil reached a 0-0 draw against Colombia to become South American champions again. Colombia was second, Argentina even lost a 2-0 lead against Ecuador and lost 3-2. Ecuador was third in the group, had to go to the playoffs against Trinidad & Tobago and qualified there as the last team for the first time with a last-minute goal. But Argentina also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in neighboring Brazil .

World Cup 2019 in France

The Copa América Femenina 2018 initially served as qualification for the third World Cup in Europe, but Argentina only finished third and thus could not qualify directly. The team still has the chance to qualify in the Pan-American playoffs against Panama to qualify for fourth place in the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup . On November 8, 2014, the first leg in Avellaneda was won 4-0 in front of around 11,500 spectators who had free entry. Estefanía Banini failed as a penalty taker in the 10th minute, but 11 minutes later a teammate made it 1-0, which was increased to 2-0 in the 27th minute. In stoppage time, two more goals were scored after two Panamanian players were sent off. Argentina then qualified for the World Cup finals with a 1-1 draw in Panama. In the 82nd minute, however , Yamila Rodriguez received the yellow-red card and was therefore suspended for the first group game. But she was only nominated for the provisional squad.

In France, the Argentinians met England and Japan for the last time in 2007 and Scotland for the first time . In the first game against ex-world champions Japan they were able to win their first World Cup point with a goalless draw. Against England they kept the 0-0 for an hour, but then conceded the only goal of the game. In their first game against Scotland, they were 3-0 down after 69 minutes. In the 74th minute, Milagros Menéndez scored the first goal, five minutes later the Scottish goalkeeper steered a long shot into her own goal and in the fourth minute of stoppage time Florencia Bonsegundo was able to convert a penalty to make it 3-3 , making her the Scottish women built their way into the round of 16, but also missed it as the worst third party in the group.

Games

Argentina have played nine World Cup games so far, six of which have been lost and two have ended in a draw.

Argentina took part in the opening game once: in 2007 against the defending champions. Argentina never played against the hosts, but twice against eventual world champions (2003 and 2007, always against Germany in the preliminary round). Argentina played most often against Japan (every time they participated) and Germany and England (twice each). Five games were the first so far against the respective opponents.

Clarisa Huber and Fabiana Vallejos played the most games (6 each). Florencia Bonsegundo , Yanina Gaitan , Eva Gonzalez and Milagros Menéndez scored the only World Cup goals for Argentina to date. They also benefited from an own goal.
