The Mobility ADO (by 2017 Grupo ADO ) is a Mexican company for transport services, which has developed in recent years by the national bus company to an international mobility services provider. Mobility ADO ensures, among other things, long-distance bus operations in southern Mexico and parts of tourism and local transport in Mexico City as well as in some cities in Spain, Portugal and Guatemala. The company also operates around 450 bus terminals in various countries.

history

Beginnings on the first lines

The beginnings of Mobility ADO are based on classic long-distance bus traffic . At the end of the 1930s, Lauro Moreno Amezquita, Jose Uriarte, Severino Pérez, Rafael Bastón, Adolfo Castellanos and Aurelio Perez founded the company Autobuses de Oriente (Eng. Buses of the East). On December 23, 1939, six buses started operating on the Mexico City - Puebla - Perote - Xalapa - Veracruz route. Lauro Moreno Amezquita started the first trip in Mexico City at 8 p.m. and reached the port city of Veracruz after 10.5 hours and 450 kilometers . Beck International buses were used . At that time there were neither bus terminals nor well-developed road networks. In addition, the demand for bus travel was low. A ticket for the route cost 14 pesos back then.

In 1948 the fleet of 32 Spartan buses with a capacity of 22 people was renewed. The new buses were capable of speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour .

Growth in bus operations

The following decade was marked by growth. The fleet reached a size of 180 buses. New buses from the Fitzjohn brand were already designed for 32 to 37 passengers (depending on the model). 1957 Coatzacoalcos and Villahermosa are added to the route network. This meant that some of the buses had to be loaded onto flippers to cross rivers.

In 1971 Centauros del Norte was taken over. Mobility ADO thus expanded its business along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to the north. With the acquisition, the bus terminals from Reynosa and Matamoros joined the ADO route network.

On December 13, 1973, the Terminal Central del Norte opened in Mexico City , through which Mobility ADO still handles traffic to the north. At the same time, the terminal is also used to switch to other bus routes to the north. In 1978 the TAPO terminal was built in the south of Mexico City and opened by José López Portillo . To this day, the TAPO terminal in Mexico City is one of the largest ADO terminals. It handled around 20 million passengers annually (2018). In addition, various other terminals in cities such as Tampico , San Cristóbal de las Casas or Villahermosa were put into operation in the 1970s .

In the 1980s, Mobility ADO had grown to a company with around 1200 buses and 4500 employees. In 1987 the ADO fleet was renewed with DINA Avante buses and the Central de Autobuses de Puebla (CAPU) opened in Puebla. With 28 million passengers annually, the CAPU is also an extremely busy terminal.

When Mexico opened up in 1992, foreign bus models were also imported and used in regular service. At the end of the 1990s, ticket sales began using computers. This happened in the noughties via the Ticketbus.com.mx platform .

Development into an international company

In 2012, Mobility ADO became a diverse mobility provider with MiEscape.mx . The platform, which replaced the pure long- distance bus ticket platform Ticketbus , from then on also offered overnight stays, hotels and trips. In 2013 Mobility ADO took over the Spanish Grupo Avanza. Avanza is considered an important transport provider in Spain. Avanza was the first private urban bus operator in Spain, the first privately operating company in the local transport sector in Madrid and the first private operator of Spanish bus terminals. In addition, Avanza was the second company to offer long-distance bus services on the Iberian Peninsula . With the acquisition, around 5400 employees and 2000 vehicles joined what was then Grupo ADO. This enabled the company to expand its portfolio with local transport networks in Spain and Portugal, rail operations and bicycle rental systems. With the purchase of Avanza, Mobility ADO also took over the operation of the Estación Sur in Madrid.

In the same year, a new control center for local traffic was put into operation in Mexico City .

Transition to Mobility ADO

In 2017 the Mobility ADO was renamed to Mobility ADO in order to highlight the entirety of the transport services provided. In 2018 the new brand identity, which was developed in collaboration with Landor Associates , was presented to the public. As a result, Mobility ADO also showed interest in operating the Tren Maya rail projects and the Mexico-Toluca rail line . Mobility ADO also communicated that between 2016 and 2018, around 2000 million Mexican pesos were invested in the maintenance and renewal of terminals and buses.

In 2018, Mobility ADO as a group transported around 450 million passengers annually and covered 1,000 million kilometers. The fleet comprised 8,400 vehicles, around 6,800 of them in Mexico. Mobility ADO employed a total of around 26,000 people.

Long-distance transport in Mexico

In the Mobility ADO (not to be confused with the ADO bus operation, which itself belongs to the Mobility ADO) there are numerous bus companies of various comfort classes.

Economy class bus service

Estrella de Oro

As Estrella de Oro, Mobility ADO offers bus connections in the states of Veracruz , México , Puebla, Oaxaca , Guerrero and in the capital. Originally founded as an independent company, Estrella de Oro served the route to Cuernavaca from 1924 and later mainly those from Mexico City to the Pacific. A drive to Acapulco took around nine hours at that time.

Estrella de Oro later diversified its services according to comfort (Pluss and Diamante) and also participated in the construction of bus terminals in various localities. In 2007 the brand was fully integrated into the Mobility ADO. Estrella de Oro buses are usually equipped with 42 seats. In 2015, 60 percent of the fleet was renewed and replaced by models from the manufacturer Volvo .

AU / Cuenca

With the AU brand, the Mobility ADO route network mainly serves smaller places. The brand serves as a link to the larger centers and as a feeder for connecting routes. The buses are equipped with 44 seats and usually do not go directly to their destination with a few stops. AU bus tickets are cheaper than those of the other brands, but the journey time is usually longer.

AU buses have also been equipped with air conditioning since the mid-2010s. Before, only the windows could be opened for air exchange. The models used are often the older models of first-class services.

Cuenca

Cuenca was founded in the 1960s in the Cuenca de Papaloapan , the region around Tuxtepec . The 48-seat buses served various destinations in the Mobility ADO route network. As of August 1, 2018, the service of the Cuenca brand , which served routes in the AU comfort class, was terminated and the routes were taken over by AU.

Texcoco

Mobility ADO operates buses in the Texcoco de Mora region under the name Texcoco . Texcoco primarily serves local destinations as well as those in Mexico City. Texcoco owns various buses for shorter and longer distances.

First class bus service

Mobility ADO operates bus services in the highest comfort class with various brands.

ADO

With ADO as the basic brand of the group, Mobility ADO connects all operating terminals in long-distance bus traffic. The buses used for this are white and red or completely red painted products from the manufacturers Mercedes-Benz , Irizar or Volvo . They are equipped with 44 seats in rows of four as standard. The seat spacing is given as 77 centimeters. Air conditioning and bathroom are part of the comfort.

The ADO Aeropuerto sub-brand also offers direct connections to Mexico City Airport . For this purpose, ADO buses are mostly used, which from time to time have a special ADO Aeropuerto paintwork.

Mobility ADO has been serving selected routes under the ADO Conecta sub-brand with Mercedes-Benz Sprinters since 2014. These are mainly used on short routes and are not equipped with bathrooms.

Ómnibus Cristóbal Colón (OCC)

The Ómnibus Cristóbal Colón (OCC) began its regular service in 1930 as Unión de Propietarios de Autotransportes on the Mexico City – CuautlaCuernavaca route . The brand was integrated into Mobility ADO in 1988 and has since complemented the group's route network. The comfort of the buses is comparable to that of ADO.

ADO Grande Lujo (ADO GL)

In March 1992 ADO expanded the luxury segment. ADO GL (GL stands for Gran Lujo - great luxury) is supposed to be a cheaper alternative to ADO Platino (then UNO). ADO GL buses are usually three-axle vehicles ( Irizar and Volvo 9700 or 9800), with Mercedes-Benz Sprinters also being used on less frequented routes. The comfort of the buses is called ejecutivo .

The brand has several screens in the interior, on which films are shown while driving. ADO GL buses used as standard in regular service have 40 seats in rows of four with increased legroom of 87 centimeters, separate bathrooms for men and women and offer coffee and drinks on board for a surcharge. All seats are equipped with a power supply. The color scheme used to be gold with wine-red accents. New buses are painted completely purple.

ADO Platino

ADO Platino is Mobility ADO's high-end product in long-distance bus traffic. In 1990 Mobility ADO expanded its services with the then Línea UNO brand and entered the luxury class. The aim was to offer the same level of comfort as when traveling by air in First Class ( Servicio de Avión por Tierra ). In 2010 UNO was renamed ADO Platino. The buses were repainted from silver to blue, with the highest level of comfort (called Lujo ) remaining identical. For years, buses from the manufacturer Volvo (primarily the 9700 model) were used, but in recent years these have been replaced by Irizar (three-axle model i8).

ADO Platino buses only have three seats per row. With 27 seats in the entire bus, more comfort is achieved, with legroom specified at 100 centimeters. The seats are bed seats with footrests that can be folded down for sleeping. The seating area is separated from the driver's area by a door. All seats have power and USB connections, a 12-inch touch-sensitive screen (Personal Entertainment System) and a table. The buses are equipped with separate bathrooms, a coffee corner and Wi-Fi. An amenity bag is usually distributed before the trip .

The ADO Platino buses only go to a few stations of the entire route network of the ADO bus company and mostly offer direct connections over long distances.

Plus and Diamante

The Ejecutivo and Lujo classes of Estrella de Oro are marketed under Pluss and Diamante . These classes are roughly comparable to the comfort of ADO GL or ADO Platino.

Line network

With its long-distance bus brands, Mobility ADO serves locations in the following Mexican states:
