The FK BATE Baryssau ( Belarusian ФК БАТЭ Барысаў ; Russian ФК БАТЭ Борисов / FK BATE Borissow , also known under the English spelling BATE Borisov ) is a Belarusian football club from Baryssau (Russian Borissow ). The initials BATE stand for Baryssau Automobil- und Traktor-Elektrik . The current cup winner and champion of 2018 is the most successful club team in Belarusian football with fifteen championship titles ahead of Dinamo Minsk .

history

The club was founded in 1973 under the name Berezina Baryssau as a work team of the BATE factory. After playing for a while at the regional level in the era of the Soviet Union and winning the regional championship title in 1974, 1976 and 1979, you had to play at a lower class from 1985 onwards. Thus, after Belarus broke away from the Soviet Union, the club started in the third Belarusian league.

In 1993 the association decided to rename itself to Fomalgaut Baryssau . In the 1994/95 season, the team was promoted to the second division. After the club gave itself its current name in 1996, it managed in 1997 to qualify as second in the table for the first division .

In the first season in the House of Lords succeeded in the second place straight away, so the team was entitled to start in the qualification for the UEFA Cup . On their first international appearance, the team faced the Lokomotiv Moscow team . The first leg in front of the home crowd was lost 7-1, the second leg 0-5. The following season the club became Belarusian champions for the first time , with only one defeat over the course of the season. This was it on July 6, 1999 against FK Dinamo Minsk , when the team lost 1-0. With the success, the first participation in qualifying for the Champions League was achieved. There, FC Shirak Gyumri was the opponent of the Belarusians in the first qualifying round . With a 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw, the first hurdle to participate in the finals was cleared. However, the team did not get past a 3-0 and 0-0 win against Helsingborgs IF in the second round of qualifying. A year later, BATE managed to qualify for the finals of the UEFA Cup. But in the first game against the top Italian club AC Milan it was over . After the first leg was lost relatively narrowly 2-0, the team was clearly defeated 4-0 on Italian turf. Since they only finished third in the league in 2001, the team relied on the Intertoto Cup to be able to present themselves in large international business. This led to the first dispute with a German club, TSV 1860 Munich . On July 7, 2002, Kantsavy became the man of the day. As a substitute for Biahanski in the 8th minute, he had the opportunity to lead his team onto the winning road with a penalty in the 23rd minute , but failed because of Simon Jentzsch . However, he overcame this in the 74th minute and scored 1-0 from his team's point of view. Before the end of the game, Kantsavy was replaced again. The result was saved over time. The second leg was clearer. FC BATE secured the 4-0 win over Munich with goals from Molash, Meronchyk, Shmihera and Oleg Strakhanovich .

In 2002, BATE qualified as leader of the table for the playoff for the championship, in which the table runner-up Nyoman Hrodna was defeated 1-0 after extra time. After two more runner-ups and fifth place in 2005, the club won both the championship and the Belarusian Cup in 2006. In the final, FK Schachzjor Salihorsk was defeated 3-1. In the league season 2007 BATE could defend the championship title. The cup final was lost to FK Dinamo Brest 3-4 on penalties after being 0-0 after regular time and extra time.

First Champions League participation

In the 2008/09 season , BATE made it into the group stage of the Champions League via Valur Reykjavík , RSC Anderlecht and Levski Sofia . In the third qualifying round, after a 1-0 first leg win at Bulgarian champions Levski Sofia in the second leg at home, a 1-1 draw was enough. This was the club's greatest success to date and at the same time the greatest success of a Belarusian football club team since the country became independent. With Real Madrid , Juventus Turin and Zenit St. Petersburg , BATE completed Group H of the competition. In the first group game against the Spanish capital city club, the club lost 2-0. The team took notice on September 30, 2008 when they beat Juventus Turin 2-2. In addition to the first two goals in their Champions League history, it was also the first point win in the current competition. The goals were scored by Sergey Krivets and Igor Stasevich . The team took the lead 2-0 up to the 23rd minute before Vincenzo Iaquinta was able to equalize with a one- two punch . Against the UEFA Cup winner from St. Petersburg last year, the Belarusians took the next point. Again, the team was in the lead thanks to a goal from Pavel Nekhaychik and held it until the 80th minute, but then had to accept an equalizer from Fatih Tekke . The last point was won on the last day of the match, December 10, 2008. Again it was Juventus Turin who could not defeat the underdog. With three draws, three defeats and a goal difference of 3: 8, the team retired after six games as bottom of the table from the tournament.

Although the team said goodbye to international business, they had previously defended the national championship in November and won the third title in a row. The team secured the title with a 2-1 win against Torpedo Schodsina two game days before the end of the season. In 30 encounters, the team scored 67 points and lost only one. With ten draws she reached twice as many as the second-placed FK Dinamo Minsk . With 16 goals each, Henads Blisnjuk and Wital Radsiwonau were the top scorers in their team and their league.

Second Champions League participation

In 2011, after the Northern Irish Linfield FC and Ekranas Panevėžys from Lithuania had been defeated in the qualifying rounds , BATE fought against SK Sturm Graz in the play-off round for a place in the group stage of the Champions League. The first leg in Minsk ended in a draw; BATE won the second leg in Graz 2-0. The opponents in Group H were FC Barcelona , AC Milan and Viktoria Pilsen . Only on the first matchday in Pilsen (1: 1) and on the fourth matchday against Milan (1: 1) won points, the remaining games were lost, and BATE was eliminated from six games with just two points.

Third Champions League participation

In 2012, after the Macedonian club Vardar Skopje and Debreceni VSC from Hungary had been defeated in the qualifying rounds , BATE fought against Hapoel Ironi Kirjat Schmona in the play-off round for a place in the group stage of the Champions League. The first leg in Minsk ended 2-0, the second leg in Israel 1-1. As opponents in Group F, Lille OSC , last year's finalists FC Bayern Munich and FC Valencia were drawn. Already on the first day of the match, a 3-1 win in Villeneuve-d'Ascq against OSC Lille surprisingly marked the first victory in the Champions League group stage. Since the club stadium in Baryssau at that time was not approved for Champions League games, the second game against FC Bayern Munich took place in the Dinamo stadium in Minsk and was also won 3-1. On October 23, 2012, Baryssau suffered their first defeat, a 3-0 defeat against Valencia. After a 4-1 defeat by Bayern Munich, BATE closed the group stage in third place, which continued their international appearance in the second round of the Europa League . There they were eliminated by Fenerbahçe Istanbul , as they lost 1-0 in Istanbul after they both separated 0-0 in the first leg.
