Basti is a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
The area is 2,6888 km². The administrative seat is the city of Basti .

The population is 2,464,464 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 18.21% and was therefore relatively high. Basti has a gender ratio of 963 women per 1000 men. The district has a literacy rate of 67.22% in 2011, an increase of almost 15 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is below the national average. Almost 85% of the population are Hindus and around 15% are Muslims . Languages spoken in the district include Awadhi in the west and Bhojpuri in the east.
Almost 5.6% of the population live in cities and the rest in rural regions. The largest city in the district was Basti with 114,657 inhabitants.

The regional economy is heavily influenced by agriculture . The district is known for its cotton textile and sugar industries.
