Bernhard Bischoff 1997

Bernhard Ludwig Heinrich Bischoff (born June 10, 1932 in Ulm, Danube ; † October 25, 2008 in Schopfheim ) was a German art historian and art teacher . He was professor for art education with a focus on medieval art, regional art and early childhood drawings in art education at the universities of education in Lörrach and Freiburg i. B.

Life

Bischoff was the second of five children of the Art educator and study council Eugen Bischoff (1902-1944) and the folklorist and archivist Angelika Bischoff Luithlen . He spent childhood and school in Ulm and, after his father died in the war and the heavy air raids on Ulm, in Ravensburg , Wangen im Allgäu and Feldstetten in the Swabian Alb .

Bischoff initially trained as a primary school teacher at the teachers' secondary school (LOS) in Nagold from 1948 to 1953 . After graduating, he passed the Abitur in 1953 , which he had previously been denied due to school dropouts due to the war. He then moved to the Pedagogical Institute (PI) in Weingarten and was sworn in as a teacher in 1955 . He financed his studies by working as a substitute teacher in various rural schools , including one-class schools . From 1957 to 1959 he studied art history and geography at the University of Tübingen , a. a. with Wilhelm Boeck , Willi Drost , Hubert Schrade and Gerth Biese , and from 1959 to 1963 art and craft education at the Stuttgart Art Academy and in Florence (Corso estivo per Stranieri), a. a. with Hans Fegers , Hans Wentzel , Albrecht Appelhans and Manfred Wundram . After completing the artistic examination, Bischoff switched to the seminar in Tübingen as a trainee teacher for art education and geography , where he passed the pedagogical examination for teaching at grammar schools in 1965 .

From April 1965, Bischoff worked as a research assistant at the Reutlingen University of Education , a. a. with Gerd Gaiser , and as an assessor of the teaching post for art education and geography. In September 1967 he first moved to the Lörrach University of Education (PH) as a lecturer in art education , and in March 1971 Bischoff was appointed professor . At the young, regional PH, he helped set up the art department . Bischoff taught in Lörrach until the university was closed in 1984. Already from the summer of 1983 with individual teaching assignments and from the summer of 1984 onwards, he continued his work at the University of Education in Freiburg i. B. continued. He retired in October 1997 and continued teaching as long as his health permitted.

Bischoff married in 1969 and had two sons and a daughter.

Focus

Bischoff focused his work on medieval art , regional art and early childhood drawings in art education .

Bischoff's purpose in life was art historical observation, research and travel. His special art-historical methodology took its starting point in the holistic perception of the first overall impression, from which he developed questions, inconsistencies and problems. He used the answers obtained by looking closely at the object for a deeper understanding and thus for a comprehensive practical view. Theoretical data and archival material only played a secondary role and insofar as they could support the understanding of what was directly visible.

The communication of art-scientific content in the context of adult education was an important concern for him. In addition to his university activities, he organized a. a. with the adult education center and the museum association Schopfheim, the art association March as well as with Hermann Brommer and the Deutschordenskommende Freiburg a multitude of lecture series and scientific excursions to many parts of Europe and to the Middle East. As a speaker at numerous vernissages , he characterized the oeuvre of local visual artists, such as B. Herbert Wentscher , Ernst Honigberger, Grete Fleischmann, August Babberger , Fritz Heeg-Erasmus, Bruno Haas or Kurt Mair. Through his research, Bischoff made important contributions to the art history of medieval cities, churches and castles, especially in the Schopfheim area since 1972 (e.g. Beuggen Castle , Hausen im Wiesental and Schopfheim, with a special focus on the old town church of St. Michael ).
