history

The company was founded in 2002 by Gunther Buskies and Dirk Darmstaedter and initially focused on German pop bands such as Niels Frevert , Erdmöbel , Tele and Anajo . Since 2005 the label has also looked after artists from the USA, Great Britain, Australia and Scandinavia, e. B. Lloyd Cole , Martin Carr, Robert Forster , Bill Pritchard, The Lilac Time , The Proper Ornaments, Bobby Conn , Christian Kjellvander or The Monochrome Set . The label publishes the records in various countries around the world via an international network of distribution partners.

In 2009 the company had a turnover of around 600,000 euros and a loss of 8,000 euros. In 2011 the label won the Hamburg Music Prize HANS in the Hamburg Label of the Year category . The greatest successes in the label's German album charts were the following releases:

In addition, the band Naked Lunch made it to number 5 in the Austrian album charts in 2013 with their release All is Fever . In total, Wallpaper Records has released over 300 records to date (as of June 2015).

Wallpaper Records is also active as a music publisher under the name Wallpaper Songs and has over 6000 copyrights in its repertoire, many of which have already been used in American and British series (including Better Call Saul (USA), Grimm (TV series) (USA) , Chuck (USA), Skins (USA) and Homeland (USA)). Howdy Partner Booking (formerly: Mural Booking) is also part of Wallpaper Records. The booking agency represents the label's own bands as well as bands that do not publish on wallpaper records. Howdy Partner Booking currently books around 60 acts in total (e.g. Die Liga der Ordemann Gentlemen, Bernd Begemann & Die Befreiung, Robert Forster, Östro 430, Bobby Conn, Christian Kjellvander and many more).

On October 17, 2013, Dirk Darmstaedter announced on his Facebook page that he will be leaving Wallpaper Records. Since then, Gunther Buskies has been the sole owner of the record label. The company also owns the electronically oriented label Bureau B , on which artists such as Karl Bartos, Roedelius, Faust and Kreidler publish their albums.

Wallpaper Records brings 25 records onto the market every year. With a turnover of around 1.2 million euros, the label generated a profit of around 36,000 euros in 2016.

BootBooHook Festival

Dirk Darmstaedter at the BootBooHook Festival 2009

From 2008 to 2012, Mural Records organized together with the cultural association FAUST e. V. and the Spandau project each year in August, the multi-day BootBooHook - music festival in Hannover . In addition to German bands from the wallpaper label, international acts were increasingly taking place. From 2008 to 2011 the festival took place on the FAUST site in the Linden-Nord district, due to local residents' complaints and the limited size of the site, the 2012 festival moved to the former site of Expo 2000 , the Expo Park am Kronsberg .

At the first festival in 2008 around 20 bands appeared on the stages of the “60s-Halle” and “Mephisto”, including Superpunk , Anajo and Bernd Begemann . It was attended by around 1200 spectators. In 2009 the festival became significantly larger. The site was expanded to include a campsite and a large open-air stage, so that over 30 bands, including Tocotronic , Kettcar , Fehlfarben and Tele , performed in front of 5,000 spectators. In 2010, The Notwist , Hot Chip , Friska Viljor , The Go! Team and Die Sterne auf. Again around 5000 visitors came on two days of the festival. In 2011 the festival took place for the first time on three days, when bands were u. a. We are Heroes and The Golden Lemons are there. There was space for 4,000 to 6,000 visitors on the new site on Kronsberg, there were three stages, a party tent and a campsite.

On June 3, 2013 it was announced that the BootBooHook Festival will not take place in 2013. The reason was the advance booking, which was far below the organizer's expectations. In addition, BootBooHook GmbH announced that it will file for bankruptcy.

Hanse Song Festival

The Hanse Song Festival , organized by Wallpaper Records, took place for the first time in 2012; the venue is the city of Stade not far from Hamburg. The concept of the small festival is to have pop and folk musicians perform for one evening at special venues in the old town of Stade. The various stages can be reached on foot within a few minutes. In the beginning of 2012 they started with 9 artists who gave concerts in the Königsmarcksaal, in the Schwedenspeicher and in the seminar gym. In 2013 the St. Wilhadi Church was added as a venue, in 2014 the regional court and in 2015 the old slaughterhouse. The fourth Hanse Song Festival took place on March 21, 2015 , at which the now six venues were played by 19 artists. For the first time there was also a kick-off event on March 20 in the form of a musical reading by Rocko Schamoni and Tex M. Strzoda. After the Hanse Song Festival was sold out in the first three years, the organizers were able to look forward to almost a thousand visitors in 2015.
