Carmel is a town in Penobscot County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 2794 inhabitants in 1182 households on an area of 95.57 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Carmel has a total area of 95.57 km², of which 94.61 km² is land and 0.96 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Carmel is in the southwest of Penobscot County. The Souadabscook Stream flows south through the center of the town . To the northwest is Edna Pond , the largest lake in the town's area. The surface is slightly hilly, the Hinkley Hill with 153 m height is the highest point.

history
Carmel was acquired by Martin Kinsley of Hampden, Massachusetts in 1695. The first settlers in the area were Paul and Abel Ruggles. Carmel was organized as a town on June 21, 1811.
Initially, the area was named Township No. 3, Second Range North of Waldo Patent (T3 R2 NWP) . Part of the Etna area was added in 1866.
