The 1990 United States Census was the 21st census in the United States since 1790 . It was carried out by the United States Census Bureau .
Selection of counting results
As a result of the census, the United States had a population of 248,709,873 as of April 1, 1990 . California remained the most populous state. Wyoming replaced Alaska as the most populous state. 58 million people said they were of German origin.
The state population figures from the 10-year United States censuses are key to determining the number of representatives from those states in the United States House of Representatives . The adjustment is usually made in the next but one Congress after a census.
