Christina Aguilera is the debut album by the American pop singer Christina Aguilera . It was released in the United States on August 24, 1999 . The album became a worldwide success and brought Aguilera an overnight breakthrough with her debut single Genie in a Bottle . This was followed by the singles What a Girl Wants , I Turn to You and Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) , which were able to build on the success of the first single. Genie in a Bottle became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1999 and one of the most successful singles of all time. Aguilera had three number one hits in the US and three top ten hits in the UK with the singles from this album . The album also contains the song Reflection, which Aguilera sang a year earlier as the soundtrack for the Disney film Mulan . In February 2000 she received the Grammy for "Best New Artist" at the 42nd Grammy Awards ; this is considered a surprise success, because at that time only the single Genie in a Bottle was released. Furthermore, Aguilera met competitors with strong sales figures such as Britney Spears , Kid Rock or Macy Gray .

Emergence

In the spring of 1998 Christina Aguilera has been selected, the song Reflection for the Disney - cartoon Mulan to sing. The song reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award . RCA Records signed a record deal with Aguilera that same week. Aguilera then worked with various producers on her debut album .

Content and musical style

The album is very much about youthful issues like love , parties and friendship . Christina Aguilera is mainly a pop and R&B album, but also contains hip-hop inspired songs such as Obvious and Love for All Seasons , as well as faster dance pop numbers such as her world hit Genie in a Bottle . The album also contains Latin tracks, like their number one hit Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) . Come On Over Baby… was the inspiration for more Latin songs, so Aguilera recorded all the songs for her next Spanish album Mi Reflejo in Spanish.

various

"Obvious", the last song from the album, was originally one of Aguilera's demo recordings that she sent to Ron Fair before Aguilera got the record deal.

Britney Spears and Aguilera both scored first place in the Chars with their debut hit and debut album, respectively. This created a rivalry between the two women. This was just a rumor, however, which Aguilera and Spears themselves refuted by coming on stage hand in hand at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards .

Christina Aguilera's debut album of the same name was received mixedly by critics. Allmusic gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and judged: “The songwriting is strong - the ballads are soulful, the dance numbers are cheesy - the production is perfect, so Aguilera's singing is in the foreground all the time. It is an asset to ballads and love songs. ” Amazon gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Commercial win

The album sold over 252,000 copies in the US in its first week , beating P. Diddy , who debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 the previous week with his second album Forever . As a result, the album was number 1 for a week . The album was on the US Billboard 200 for 78 weeks, 107 weeks on the UK album charts and 70 weeks on the Canadian album charts.

Christina Aguilera's debut album has been sold over 8 million times in the US alone and has been certified 8 platinum in the US based on these numbers.

Genius in a Bottle

Christina Aguilera sings Genie in a Bottle on her Back to Basics World Tour 2006

Genie in a Bottle is the first single from Christina Aguilera's debut album Christina Aguilera . The title was Aguilera's breakthrough and stayed at # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks . The song went platinum several times , and Christina Aguilera was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

After Aguilera signed a recording deal with RCA Records , she began working on her debut album. David Frank, Steve Kipner and Pamela Sheyne wrote Genie in a Bottle , but Aguilera was not convinced that the song made her voice stand out enough. The songwriters said it was a fight between Aguilera and her producers because Aguilera wanted to show the strength and courage in her voice, but the producers held her back. The original title of the song was If You Wanna Be With Me , but RCA thought Genie in a Bottle would be better.

The text is about young women who are looking for a partner to spend the nights together. The lyrics have been censored where Aguilera sings "you gotta treat me the right way".

Diane Martell directed the music video; recording began in Malibu , California in the summer of 1999 . Aguilera wears skimpy hip-hop clothing in the video .

Aguilera sang a remake version of the song called Genie 2.0 at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards in Hollywood . Genie 2.0 is also featured on their first greatest hits album, Keeps Gettin 'Better a Decade of Hits .

The song was released on June 22, 1999 and reached # 1 on the Billboard Pop Charts, the Top 40 Mainstream, Top 40 Tracks, and Rythmic Top 40 Charts, and the Top 40 Adult 'Charts. The Spanish version of Genie in a Bottle , Genio Atrapado became a top hit on the Latin charts.

Genie in a Bottle stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 25 weeks and on the UK charts for 43 weeks, where, as in Canada, it stayed at number 1 for several weeks.

The song is Aguilera's second biggest chart success, behind Lady Marmalade , a collaboration with Lil 'Kim , Mýa and Pink . Genie in a Bottle was also awarded platinum in Germany for over 500,000 units sold.

Genie in a Bottle became Aguilera's first worldwide number 1 hit on the 'Worldwide Singles Charts', where the song stayed for 29 weeks. The single sold more than a million times worldwide. The song was number 7 in the US and European annual charts.

For Genie in a Bottle , Aguilera received a Grammy nomination in the category "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" in 1999. The single brought Aguilera many awards, such as: B. "Best Selling New Artist" at the World Music Awards.

The piece was released in November 1999 and reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 15, 2000 , which it held for two weeks. The single received five nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards , in the categories "Best Female Video", "Best New Artist", "Best Pop Video", "Viewer's Choice" and "Best Choreography". The song also had a Grammy nomination for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" in 2001.

Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)

Christina Aguilera sings Come On Over during her Stripped Tour.

Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) is a song by the American singer Christina Aguilera. It was written by Aguilera, Paul Rein, Johan Aberg, Celebrity Status (C. Blackmon, R. Cham, E. Dawkins), Guy Roche, Shelly Peiken, and Ron Fair for Aguilera's debut album Christina Aguilera in 1999. It was written by Celebrity Status and fair co-produced.

The song is about Aguilera's boyfriend ( Come on over baby… cause all I want is you ). It was released as the fourth single from the album in the summer of 2000. Come On Over Baby was the first single Aguilera got good reviews for. The song reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , making it Aguilera's third number 1 hit in the United States.

In both music videos - Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) and Ven Conmigo (Solamento Tú) - led Paul Hunter directed.

Like What a Girl Wants , the album's second single, a remix version and a re-released version of Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) were produced and released as a separate single and as the original single from the album. The album version was not intended as a release. When the single was written and produced by Paul Rein and Johan Aberg, their first choice was whether to release the song or not. Aguilera and Ron Fair (her mentor) weren't impressed with the original version, so Celebrity Status produced a new version of the song.

When Celebrity Status and Ron Fair Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) produced the album version, the song was more pop- oriented; the song also had hip-hop influences (in contrast to the original piano version) and new lyrics with more sexual content as well as a bridge (which the original didn't have) and a rap by Aguilera, a new dance-pop oriented song , with more power from Aguilera. (The song includes new elements from Guy Roche and Shelly Peiken.) Aguilera added controversial sexual rap lyrics to the song that are not on the album version:

“Don't ya wanna be the one tonight? We can do exactly what you like. Don't ya wanna be just you and me? We can do what comes naturally. "

This rap (in verse 2 ) was censored like in Genie in a Bottle . Only the original album version of the single was played on the radio, not the new re-released single.

The music video was directed by Paul Hunter. The video starts with Aguillera in a phone booth with her boyfriend, then she breaks out and dances in a bathing suit through an empty street until she comes home, there she goes into the bedroom; meanwhile dancers come into the bedroom and dance; in the next scene Aguilera strips on the bed surrounded by the dancers.

The music video for Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) became a hit and reached number one on the TRL charts. The scenes were even harder than with their debut single Genie in a Bottle , but not nearly as hard as with the music video for their upcoming single Dirrty . After the media had hoped for a change of style from Aguilera, she showed her sexual image again , which can be clearly seen in the music video; as with Genie in a Bottle , the toughest scenes were censored such as B. Lapdance and stripping . Aguilera also dyed her hair black, which should make some scenes even more sexual. In the video, Aguilera also inspires her fans for her first Spanish-language album Mi Reflejo and for her first world tour.

The music video for Ven Conmigo was almost the same as that of the English language single. In Ven Conmigo Aguilera wearing a dark eyes - makeup . Her lipstick is pink . Paul Hunter directed both videos.

Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) became Aguilera's third number 1 hit in the US. The single went gold in the United States. She spent 21 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and landed at 48th place on the American annual charts. The Spanish single Ven Conmigo became a number 1 hit in the Latin and Spanish charts.

After strong reviews from their record company RCA , the single became a hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 not only because of the huge sales and airplay, but also because of the popularity of the music video, which reached number 1 on the TRL charts . Just because of the popularity of the video, it is Aguilera's most successful music video to date. In addition, the music video was played by far the most on MTV , TRL and VIVA .

Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) reached the top ten in Great Britain, Japan and Australia and the top twenty in Canada, but across Europe the single was not as successful with placements in the top forty. For Aguilera, the single was nevertheless international top with No. 1 in Ireland, No. 2 in New Zealand, where the single stayed in the charts for 13 weeks. In the US, the single reached gold with over 500,000 units sold. In Australia, the single went platinum. Come on Over was # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and on the Australian charts for 20 weeks.

The Spanish version reached 1st place in the Latin charts and in the Spanish charts. Come on Over is also featured on Aguilera's first greatest hits album, Keeps Gettin 'Better A Decade of Hits .

Christina Aguilera sang Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) at the MTV Video Music Awards 2000. She appeared in the same outfit as in her music video for the single and with her hair dyed black. At the MTV Video Music Awards she presented her song together with Britney Spears . The performance caused a scandal and hit the headlines when the two singers kissed and kissed at the end of the performance. Aguilera sang her hit every time on her world tours.

The single was released on US radio stations on September 26, 2000. The song was available in many formats, including cassette tape in the UK . The Spanish version Ven Conmigo is included on the B-sides of the respective format .
