The Smurfs (original title: The Smurfs ) is an American 3D film - a mixture of real and computer animation film - from 2011 by director Raja Gosnell . After The Smurfs and the Magic Flute from 1975, the production is the second feature film about the cartoon characters of the same name by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo .
action
The Smurfs live quietly in their mushroom village in the magical forest and are preparing for the Blue Moon Festival . Meanwhile, clumsy Clumsy wants to get smurf roots for Papa Smurf, but accidentally ventures too close to the territory of the evil wizard Gargamel . He pursues him and is unintentionally led into the village by Clumsy. On the run, Clumsy also runs in the wrong direction and ends up in a magical waterfall with Papa Smurf, Schlaubi, McTapfer, Muffi and Smurfette, which transports them to today's Manhattan . Gargamel and his cat Azrael also follow the Smurfs.
In New York, Clumsy ends up in a box owned by advertising specialist Patrick, who takes him home. The other Smurfs follow him and get to know Patrick and his pregnant wife Grace. She is enthusiastic about the mythical creatures, but he doesn't like the unannounced visit at all, because the blue dwarfs not only cause a lot of restlessness, but also disturb him when creating a new make-up advertising campaign. Clumsy's renewed clumsiness means that the wrong advertisement - one with a blue moon - is published. The Smurfs want to go home as soon as possible, but they lack the blue moon and magic.
In the meantime, Gargamel has extracted its blue essence from one of Smurfine's hair and is on the heels of the Smurfs. He chases them, but keeps failing. Until he catches Papa Smurf in an antique shop where the Smurfs are looking for a magic book. He still makes the others promise not to save him, but to use the magic and return home that night by the blue moon.
Patrick sees through his wife and the Smurfs that his family should be more important to him than his work and he decides to save Papa Smurf. Despite their promise, the Smurfs also participate in the rescue. While Schlaubi opens the portal into the village and gets help, they storm Belvedere Castle , where Gargamel has taken up residence. He got a lot more essence from Dad and has become very powerful. Nevertheless, the Smurfs defeat him and Clumsy manages to catch the magic scepter at the last moment.
Due to the magic, the moon has turned blue, which Patrick's client considers a PR gag and does not fire him. The Smurfs return home.

Reviews
“The old magic of cartoons is lost a bit, but the makers compensate for it with wit and elegance. Smurfy. "
“The film's obvious strengths are on the technical side. The 3D process is relatively unobtrusive, but still used effectively, while the interaction of the actors with the animated Smurfs has reached an astonishing degree of perfection. [...] In the cartoon series, the individual Schlumpf adventures are told in ten to 20 minutes, and in the feature film, too, the plot now has little more substance than one of these episodes. "
"With many gags enriched 3D adaptation of the cult characters, which implements the clash of the archaic world of the Smurfs and the present in a very charming way, but at the same time reveals a deliberately backward-looking family image."
“The film [is] actually crafted and the level of entertainment is appealing […], but it still lacks that certain something. The special X-factor that has made films like ' Wall-E ', ' Oben ' or ' How To Train Your Dragon ' into animation masterpieces or creative surprise successes simply does not want to appear here. [...] If you don't over-analyze the whole thing and just want to have fun, you can also have a smurfy time going to the cinema. But the film doesn't come close to Disney - or Pixar - animation pearls. "
continuation
- In The Smurfs 2 (2013), the evil magician Gargamel creates the two smurf-like but naughty creatures Hauie and Zicki, called the louts, in order to get to the magical Smurf essence. When he realizes that only a real Smurf can fulfill his wish, he kidnaps Smurfette to Paris. While the louts try to get Smurfette on their side, Papa Smurf, Clumsy, Muffy and Beauty set out into the human world to save Smurfette.
Trivia
On the occasion of the premiere of the film in Júzcar ( Spain ) all facades of the village were colored blue for marketing purposes . In a vote at the end of 2011, residents were asked whether the houses should remain blue or should be returned to their original white condition. 33 residents voted against retention, 141 residents in favor of retention. This means that Júzcar will remain blue.
