The Droschl literary publishing house is based in Graz and has dedicated itself exclusively to contemporary literature by German and foreign-language authors since it was founded .

The first track of the publishing house published in 1978 (Art books of Giuseppe Zigaina and Adolf Frohner ) after there had been Droschl for several years as a gallery and bookstore. Among the first authors were such well-known names as Wolfgang Bauer and Bernhard Hüttenegger , followed in the next few years by Helmut Eisendle , Gerhard Roth , Klaus Hoffer , Reinhard P. Gruber and Alfred Kolleritsch .

Contemporary literature

Even with Droschl's first books, the focus was on the area beyond traditional literature; the authors were so-called “tradition breakers” or formal innovators.

The first books by authors such as Reinhold Aumaier , Lucas Cejpek , Michael Donhauser , Antonio Fian , Eleonore Frey , Ingram Hartinger , Gabriel Loidolt , Gian Pedretti , Peter Pessl , Georg Pichler , Walter Vogl or Peter Waterhouse , all in the 80s, sold bad, but garnered the attention of critics, literary prizes and awards. This risk-taking publishing of first publications was continued: debut volumes by Bettina Balàka , Helga Glantschnig , Lydia Mischkulnig , Rosa Pock , Sissi Tax , Matthias Göritz , Ingeborg Horn and Almut Tina Schmidt appeared; the career of Werner Schwab began in 1992 with the plays in his first band "feces Dramas". In 1988 the 3sat Prize of the Bachmann Prize went to Anselm Glück ; In 1994, Klaus Händl received both the Rauriser Literature Prize and the Robert Walser Prize for his debut; In 1995 Gundi Feyrer received the Graz City Clerk's Office and in 1997 the Prize of the Province of Carinthia ; In 1999 Bettina Balàka was awarded the Meta Merz Prize and the Ö1 Essay Prize ; the first recipient of the Holfeld Tunzer Prize in 2001 was Sissi Tax, and Bodo Hell was awarded the Prize of Literature Houses in March 2003 . Ernst Jandl praised the publisher in Profil magazine as a courageous and dynamic exception in the publishing landscape. These younger authors stand next to the older, recognized ones who are represented in the Droschl program with editions of works: Wilhelm Muster , Alfred Kolleritsch , Wolfgang Bauer , Reinhard P. Gruber , Monique Schwitter , Gertraud Klemm .

Translations

A second focus of Droschl's activities is translations. The first title appeared in 1986: “Frisbees”, a bilingual book of poetry by Giulia Niccolai , the “mother of the Italian avant-garde”. Since then, modern classics have been published continuously: Miguel de Unamuno , Victor Segalen , Henri Michaux , Julien Gracq , Michel Butor , Michel Leiris and Paul Bowles . Dieter Hornig received the European Union's Aristeion Prize for his Michaux translations .

Poetry is often published in bilingual editions. Here are Tomas Šalamun and Tadeusz Różewicz called Bohumila Grögerová and Josef Hiršal that Hungary Endre Kukorelly and Dezső Tandori , the English authors Michael Hamburger and Basil Bunting , the American poet ( Robert Creeley ), the Moroccan stories of Mohammed Mrabet and Larbi Layachi and the Croatian and Bosnian authors Irena Vrkljan and Dragana Tomaševic. Many authors were introduced to the German-speaking audience for the first time with their Droschl publications, starting with Andrea Zanzotto, Marina Palej, Maja Vidmar, César Aira to Rada Ivekovic, Ferenc Szijj, László Garaczi and Tobias Wolff.

In 1992 Heimrad Bäcker's "Verlag edition neue texte" was taken over. She brought together drafts of a new kind of literature in a publishing program that further developed the strands of modernity, which were determined by rigorous linguistic reflection and strict reference to material in equal measure, and thus enabled a continuous bridge between the older authors, such as the Viennese group, and the following generations - a deserved forum experimental, language-critical writers such as Franz Josef Czernin , Andreas Okopenko , Reinhard Priessnitz , Gerhard Rühm , Ferdinand Schmatz , Dominik Steiger (writer) and Hansjörg Zauner . Elfriede Gerstl was awarded both the Georg Trakl Prize and the Erich Fried Prize for her work in 1999 , and Heimrad Bäcker's life's work was honored in a comprehensive exhibition at the Landesgalerie in Linz at the end of 2002.

Series - Dossier, Essay

Several series have been launched since the publishing house was founded. Many of them will be continued, especially the Essay and Dossier series . Each dossier volume is dedicated to a leading figure in Austrian literary life - so far the authors Ilse Aichinger , HC Artmann , Wolfgang Bauer , Albert Drach , Gunter Falk , Barbara Frischmuth , Elfriede Gerstl , Norbert Gstrein , Peter Handke , Raoul Hausmann , Peter Henisch , Klaus Hoffer , Elfriede Jelinek , Gert Jonke , Michael Köhlmeier , Alfred Kolleritsch , Hans Lebert , Friederike Mayröcker , Anna Mitgutsch , Peter Rosei , Gerhard Roth , Gerhard Rühm , Leopold von Sacher-Masoch , Michael Scharang , Werner Schwab , Marlene Streeruwitz and Josef Winkler . The essay series, with 49 titles so far, is intended to present the literary essay in its various forms as an art form in individual editions and anthologies. Here, always in first editions, are texts by Elfriede Czurda , Dorothea Dieckmann , William Gass , Hans-Jürgen Heinrichs , Felix Philipp Ingold , Birgit Kempker , Brigitte Kronauer , Miodrag Pavlović , Schuldt, Jesper Svenbro , Yoko Tawada , Dieter Wellershoff , Paul Wühr and others appeared.

General

The Droschl program is not easy, there is no clear line, no simple profile. The program that the National Library in Vienna honored with the purchase of the archive from the first two decades was the unformulated credo of the publisher's founder Maximilian Droschl, who led the company with remarkable continuity for the first 25 years. His daughter, Annette Knoch, took over the fate of the literary publisher in May 2003 with the same enthusiasm.
