The name Flattach is probably derived from the Alpine Slavonic blato for moss . The municipality of Flattach was not constituted until 1895 when it was separated from the market municipality of Obervellach . In addition to agriculture and forestry, which are still predominant today, copper mining also played an important role in the past. In the course of the 20th century, tourism ( Raggaschlucht and ski area on the Mölltal Glacier ) and the Fragant power plant group became economically important factors within the community.

Economy and Infrastructure
The municipality of Flattach is located on Mölltalstraße (B 106).
The Serviced has become like everywhere in the Alps to a hobby or a modest extra income. Until the 1970s there was an alpine path through which the cattle were driven from Kolm-Saigurn in Salzburg over the Fraganter Tauern ( 2754 m ) to the high pastures of the Fragant.
In the past, ore was mined in various places , and some tunnels are still preserved today. So the name of the district Schmelzhütten still points to the montane past. Most important was the copper mining in the Großfragant , which started in the 17th century and reached its climax and end with the First World War .
In Außerfragant the turbine building located Kraftwerksgruppe Fragant , a storage power station of KELAG , the water not only from reservoirs in the Fragant, but also from the Zirknitz and Wölla relates.
Today tourism is an important pillar. The Mölltal Glacier is located in the municipality of Flattach . The famous Raggaschlucht and the Duisburgerhütte of the DAV , the Fraganter Schutzhaus and the Dr. Hans Widder youth hostel of the Alpenverein Klagenfurt ( OeAV ) as well as the Weißseehaus of the friends of nature in the community.

coat of arms
As early as 1959, the municipality stipulated the motif of a coat of arms, referring to an earlier use with the tack (hammer and mallet), but received no approval for this, and further drafts could not be considered due to deficiencies in content or form. Attempts by the Carinthian Provincial Archives to bring in elements of the landscape and economy in 1977 and later a crab (Slov. Rak ) as the eponymous symbol for the Raggaschlucht also failed. In 1990, the community decided on a coat of arms with scenic and tourist motifs (cable car, Raggaschlucht), which, however, was not approved by the state government due to heraldic deficiencies. So only a further attempt in 2005 brought the breakthrough, when the coat of arms in the form that is valid today was determined from a combination of different designs - Flattach was the last Carinthian municipality to be awarded a coat of arms.
On May 8, 2006, the municipality received the right to carry a coat of arms and a flag with the following description:
- “Divided by blue and black, above with a silver Dreispitzberg, the middle point of which touches the main edge, below a silver counter-wedge, at the heart point a red Pelton wheel. The flag shows the colors blue-red with an incorporated coat of arms. "
The silver wedge represents the striking Ragga Gorge, from which the stylized mountain scenery of the Mölltal Glacier protrudes. The red Pelton wheel stands for electricity generated by the Fragant storage power plant.
