qualification

After Australia left the Oceanic Football Association at the end of 2005 , the team qualified for the first time through the AFC qualifying games, the qualifying games of the Asian Football Association , for the World Cup in South Africa .

Due to a bye for the first two rounds, Australia only joined the current competition from the third qualifying round. The team prevailed in Group 1 against Qatar , Iraq and China and advanced to the next round together with group runner-up Qatar.

In the fourth round, groups were played again, but the teams were only divided into two groups of five teams each. As before, Australia was again represented in the first group and clearly prevailed against Japan , Bahrain , Qatar and Uzbekistan . After eight games, Australia recorded six wins and two draws and qualified together with group runner-up Japan for the World Cup.

Australian contingent

National coach Pim Verbeek originally nominated 31 players, in addition to the 30 players on the provisional entry list, Eugene Galekovic was also part of the training squad as reserve keeper. One day after the friendly against New Zealand on May 25, Verbeek cut three players with Scott McDonald , Nick Carle and Jade North , while the remaining 28 players flew to South Africa to prepare.

As the last of the 32 participating teams, Australia announced the final squad on June 2, next to Galekovic, the perspective players James Holland and Tommy Oar , whom Verbeek had only given outsider chances, as well as Shane Lowry and due to injury Rhys Williams were not called into the final squad. While Williams immediately returned to his club in England for further treatment, the remaining four players remained with the national team until the start of the tournament. On June 6, substitute goalkeeper Brad Jones left South Africa and canceled his tournament participation a short time later after his son became aware of cancer. Following special approval from FIFA, Galekovic was appointed to the squad for him.

In the preliminary round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Australian national team met in Group D against Germany , Serbia and Ghana . The Australians made a false start in their second World Cup participation in a row. With 0: 4 against group favorite Germany there was the second highest defeat of all preliminary round matches. Although they recovered against Ghana afterwards, the 1-1 draw ultimately turned out to be too little, because despite a victory in the final game against Serbia, the team came third in the table due to the poor goal difference and was eliminated.
