Group draw

Venues and quarters (blue / italic) of the Serbs

For the draw of the qualification groups on December 1st, Serbia was assigned to Pot 4 and could therefore be drawn into a group with world champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, vice world champions Argentina or host Russia. Serbia meet in Group E on Brazil , Costa Rica and Switzerland . Serbia did not meet any of the three teams in its only participation so far in 2010. One of the previous teams, Yugoslavia , met Brazil in their first World Cup match in 1930 and won 2-1. In the preliminary rounds in 1950 (0: 2), 1954 (1: 1 a.s.) and 1974 (0: 0) there were further World Cup games between the two. There were a total of 14 games against Brazil, two of which were won and six each ended or lost. There is also a defeat for the Serbs against Brazil. The Yugoslavs have also played a World Cup against Switzerland: in 1950 they won 3-0 in the preliminary round. Of a total of nine games against Switzerland, the Yugoslavs won five and played two draws and two losses. The Serbs, on the other hand, have never played against Switzerland themselves, but four times as a union of states with Montenegro (1 win, 3 draws). There have been no games against Costa Rica yet.

So far, the Serbs had only been able to gain experience in the Moscow stadiums of the World Cup; neither Serbia nor their predecessors had played in the other two group venues.
