Fukushima ( Japanese 福島 町 , - chō ) is a small town on the island of Hokkaidō in Japan . It belongs to the district Matsumae in the sub-prefecture Oshima
Fukushima is considered to be the stronghold of sumo wrestling . Of the fighters who have reached the highest rank of yokozuna , two come from here, Chiyonoyama Masanobu and Chiyonofuji Mitsugu . A museum is dedicated to them. Another museum deals with the Seikan tunnel , which runs under the city.
geography
Fukushima is located at the southern end of the Matsumae Peninsula, which in turn belongs to the Oshima Peninsula . It is located at the confluence of the Fukushima-gawa ( 福島 川 ) in the Tsugaru Street . The district ( 千 軒 ) Sengen is just 8 km north of the city center, separated by unpopulated, wooded mountainous land that makes up the majority of the municipality, along the Chinai-gawa valley plain ( 知 内 川 ).
The highest point is the Maesengen-dake ( 前 千 軒 岳 ) with 1056 m on the border with Matsumae .
traffic
The main highway is the National Road 228 which runs along the coast of the Oshima Peninsula to Hakodate or Esashi .
There is no longer any connection to the rail network. Likewise, in 1998 the ferry service to Sotogahama on the other bank of Tsugaru Strait was stopped.
Twin cities
Fukushima made city friendships with Fukushima (today: Matsuura ) and Kiso-Fukushima (today: Kiso ) due to the common name . Another is Minmaya (today: Sotogahama ), which is at the other end of the Seikan tunnel .
education
Fukushima is home to Fukushima and Yoshioka Elementary Schools, Fukushima Middle School, and Fukuoka Prefectural Commercial High School.
