The place is located about 11.6 km from the city center at the eastern foot of an elevation of the same name (300 m). To the west, Hömel borders directly on the urban area of Wiehl , a neighboring municipality of Gummersbach.

history

In 1443 the place was mentioned for the first time in the list of income and rights of the Cologne Apostelstifts (spelling of the first mention : zo dem Homel ).

Together with the districts Ohmig , Hunstig and Bünghausen, Hömel forms a local community that looks back on more than 550 years of shared history. Until 1969, Hömel, like the three other places, belonged to the former community of Bielstein and then became part of the municipality of Gummersbach as part of the community reform .
