Würden is a district of Gummersbach in the Oberbergisches Kreis in southern North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

geography

Würden is located about 11.5 km from the center in the extreme north-western corner of the municipality. The place is located on a ridge between Gelpe and Leppetal . The closest districts are Berghausen in an east-northeast direction and Hagen in a south-southeast direction.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1542 when a goman was listed in the Turkish tax list.

On September 3, 1949, what was then known as the “Bergbad” (actually a hot water basin from a steelworks located in neighboring Leppetal ), the region's most serious bathing accident to date occurred Schoolgirls taken at their word. Twelve children drowned after they had not found a grip on the algae-covered slope of the swimming pool and slipped into the deep area. In the tower hall of the parish church of St. Johann Baptist in Gimborn , three memorial plaques commemorate the catastrophe, two of which immortalize the names of the girls who died. The oldest was 15, the youngest 12 years old.
