Attractions

"Castle"

The upper part of Helberg is dominated by the so-called "castle", a fortified-looking farmhouse. The Feste Haus or Kasteel (Low German for fort ), over two storeys with mighty quarry stone walls and a multiple folded hipped roof , arouses interest in particular due to its unusual square shape with cut corners (basic shape 14 m * 14 m, four long sides of 11.3 m and four short 1.8 m each - measured across the corner). The "castle" was expanded in the 18th century over an allegedly medieval complex. The house received a new interior work in 1918 and is currently being completely restored into a large single-family house. According to the architect in charge of the monument-care measures, the details of the external dimensions according to Rentsch are not correct. This is why it is basically not an octagon, as the object is usually described elsewhere, since the side lengths are not the same length, i.e. not octagon-conform.

leisure

Hiking and bike paths

  • From the Helberg hiking car park , SGV offers the A1 circular hiking trail (4.6 km).

traffic

Helberg is only indirectly connected to public transport . The place can be reached by bus line 318 (Gummersbach - ( Niedernhagen -) Lieberhausen / Piene / Pernze ) via the Deitenbach stop , from there about 1 km on foot.
