Handball GDR Championship 1956/57
With the handball GDR championship in 1956/57 , the GDR champions in indoor and field handball were determined for both men and women.
Oberliga Men (Halle)
As in previous years, the men's indoor handball league was held again with two seasons, in which eight teams each competed in the 1956/57 season. Five newcomers competed with the SC Lokomotive Leipzig and the company sports associations (BSG) Motor Mitte Magdeburg , Chemie Meißen , Lokomotive Rangsdorf and SC Aufbau Berlin . The season winners SC Empor Rostock and BSG Motor Eisenach played in the final for the championship title won by SC Empor. In consideration of the preparations for the men's handball world championship in 1958 , which took place in the GDR in February / March 1958 , the league was only carried out with seven rounds between November 1956 and January 1957, with all games taking place on neutral courts.

Oberliga women (hall)
As with the men, the league was carried out between November 1956 and January 1957, but only in a season with eight teams. They too played their seven games on neutral courts. Since the league had been increased from six to eight participants, there were four newcomers with the SC Lok Leipzig and the company sports associations Chemie Radebeul , Post Halberstadt and Motor Weimar . Since the league was to be increased to twelve teams in the following season, there was only one relegated team in 1956/57.
The women's indoor champion was newcomer SC Lok Leipzig with one point ahead of SC Progress Weissenfels , while last year's champion Lokomotive Rangsdorf only achieved third place. As the best company sports club, Chemie Radebeul came fourth.

Endgame
The final of the East German championship in field handball men found on October 13, 1957 in Dresden in Heinz-Steyer Stadium held 12,000 spectators.
SC Dynamo Berlin - BSG Lok Südost Magdeburg 11: 8 (6: 3) |
The defending champion Dynamo Berlin went into the final as the favorite, whose players were particularly successful with their long throws. While both teams initially preferred the attacking game, the action shifted to the defensive over and over again. The assault lines found it difficult to overcome the concentrated defensive blocks. The Berliners were finally able to thank Rudolf Hirsch, who, as the most successful thrower of the day with his six goals, secured the title defense. The Magdeburg team failed because of their tight attacking game and unsuccessful individual actions. Overall, both teams lacked game quality. ( Neue Zeit , October 15, 1957, p. 5)

Oberliga women (field)
The women's league in field handball also started in April 1957. As in the previous season, the game was played in two seasons with seven teams each, in which the SC DHfK Leipzig and BSG Chemie Radebeul competed as newcomers. While the season winners had to contest the final, the bottom of the table had to relegate from the league.

Endgame
The women's final was played before the men's final in Dresden's Heinz-Steyer Stadium.
SC progress Weißenfels - BSG locomotive Rangsdorf 10: 4 (2: 3) |
Surprisingly, the women from Lok Rangsdorf led 3-2 against the two-time champions at the break. It was only when Weißenfels coach Becker had tactically recruited the team after the break that the team lived up to their role as favorites with fast bridging of the midfield and powerful attacking actions.
The master's squad from 1957 included Hilde Baumert, Marita Häuber, Gisela Herden, Inge Jahn, Erika Köber, Ilse Kühn, Hannelore Lemnitzer, Martina Maudrich, Erika Müller, Erika Quark and Inge Schandig
