Hardinxveld-Giessendam ( municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland and, according to the CBS, had 18,064 inhabitants on January 31, 2019 . Their total area is 19.35 km².
) is aThe municipality includes the twin village Hardinxveld-Giessendam, where the town hall is also located, and Boven Hardinxveld, which is more to the east.
Location and economy
Hardinxveld-Giessendam is located on the north bank of the Merwede river , in the Alblasserwaard polder , between Sliedrecht and Gorinchem . It has a small train station on the Dordrecht - Tiel line . The Rijksweg 15 motorway between these two cities also runs through the municipality.
Neighboring communities are Molenlanden in the north, Gorinchem in the east, Werkendam in the south, Dordrecht in the south-west and Sliedrecht in the west .
The location on the river has given industry a strong boost. In the village there are many companies that produce ship parts, a few repair and maintenance yards and, like in Werkendam, many construction companies.
history
Hardinxveld and Giessendam were originally two different villages that both emerged in the 13th century. Giessendam was on a dam in the small moor stream Giessen. Hardinxveld was already flourishing in the Middle Ages: in the 14th century it was free of customs duties and had its own jurisdiction .
Up until the middle of the 19th century these villages were particularly threatened by the following circumstances during severe winters: At Boven Hardinxveld the river was a little narrower than elsewhere. As a result, more sand settled from the upper reaches, and sandbanks formed. When the river froze over and began to thaw again, thick ice dams formed from ice floes on these sandbanks. These could crush the river dikes with great force and cause flooding. Often there were deaths, the property damage was always considerable. As a result, the repair of the dikes in this region became the highest priority after around 1820, after which such disasters did not occur.
More about the history of the Alblasserwaard can be found in the local museum "De Koperen Knop". It is located in a monumental farm built around 1700.
