Hnilec (German Hniletz , Hungarian Nyilas - until 1907 Nagyhnilec ) is a place and a municipality in the Spišská Nová Ves District ( Košický kraj ) in the east of Slovakia , with a population of 406 (December 31, 2019).

geography

The municipality is located in the valley of the river of the same name in the Slovak Ore Mountains , more precisely between the parts of Volovské vrchy and Slovak Paradise , 23 kilometers from Spišská Nová Ves and 32 kilometers from Rožňava .

In addition to the main town, the Delava district also belongs to the municipality.

history

The place was founded by miners and appears for the first time in a document in 1290. A silver ore mine was operated in the 14th and 15th centuries, with the main export to Poland. In addition to mining, forestry and weaving were also well developed; in the 19th century there were hammer mills. In 1828 there were 30 houses and 218 residents here. During the time of the monarchy the place was divided between the counties of Spiš and Gemer , with the river as a border.

After 1918 the place previously part of the Kingdom of Hungary became part of Czechoslovakia; In 1926 both parts were united and, like the Spiš part before, belonged to the town of Spišská Nová Ves as one of its districts. It was not until 1954 that the present-day community was spun off and established.
