Horňany (Hungarian Hornyán ) is a municipality in the north- west of Slovakia , with 436 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Trenčín District , part of the kraj Trenčiansky .

The municipality is located in the northernmost part of the Nitrianska pahorkatina hills and thus also the Slovakian Danube lowlands , on the middle course of the Machnáč brook . The center of the village is at an altitude of 222  m nm and is eight kilometers from Bánovce nad Bebravou and 22 kilometers from Trenčín .

Neighboring communities are Bobot in the north, Dežerice in the east and south and Svinná in the west.

history

Church in Horňany

Horňany was first mentioned in writing in 1352 as Hornyan and was then part of the territory of Trenčín Castle . After the village became deserted due to the Hussite Wars, it was then repopulated. In 1598 the village had a mill and 24 houses. In 1828 there were 34 houses and 405 inhabitants who were farmers and carters by profession. In the 19th century there was a saw in the village.

The municipality in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 440 inhabitants lived in Horňany, including 405 Slovaks , 2 Czechs and one Magyar . 32 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

320 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 5 residents each to the Evangelical Church AB and the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Orthodox Church; 2 residents professed a different denomination. 26 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 81 residents was not determined.
