IC 3583 is an irregular galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type IBm in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 48 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VVC 1686 . Together with Messier 90 ( NGC 4569 ) it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Arp 76
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a small companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
