NGC 4571 = IC 3588 is a spiral-shaped dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sc in the constellation Coma Berenices the northern sky . It is estimated to be 13 million light years from the Milky Way , has a diameter of about 15,000 ly and is listed under catalog number VVC 1696 as part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
The galaxies NGC 4588 , IC 3521 , IC 3576 , IC 3591 are in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on January 14, 1787 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
The discovery of a Cepheid with the help of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in 1994 made it possible to determine the distance and assign it to the Virgo galaxy cluster .
