NGC 4559 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 36 million light years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 115,000 ly. The galaxy has an angular extent of 10.7 'x 4.4' and an apparent magnitude of 9.6 mag.
The galaxies NGC 4558 , NGC 4563 , IC 3556 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 11, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
HII regions
On March 23, 1903, Max Wolf observed several smaller HII regions and star associations in the galaxy NGC 4559, which have been recorded in the index catalog .
