The voiceless palatal fricative (an unvoiced , the hard palate educated fricative ) has the following in different languages phonetic and orthographic realizations:

  • German [⁠ ç ⁠] : soft ch , I-sound , allophone of / ⁠ x ⁠ / : Each ch , not on a back vowel ( a, o, u ) or the diphthong au follows, and in the diminutive syllable "-chen". In the German standard variety often with the initial ch as well as with the ending -ig (if no vowel follows).
  • English [⁠ ç ⁠] : Partly as allophone of / hj / ( RP and some other varieties):
