The Berlin University of Applied Sciences ( HTW Berlin ) is the largest state university of applied sciences in Berlin and East Germany with almost 14,000 students and over 500 employees . There are around 70 courses offered in the fields of technology , IT , business , culture and design .
HTW Berlin is spread over two locations: the Treskowallee campus in Berlin-Karlshorst and the Wilhelminenhof campus in Berlin-Oberschöneweide .
history
Technical school for decomposition, composition and pattern drawing
The technical school for decomposing , composing and pattern drawing was founded in 1874, from which the Higher Weaving School Berlin developed . When this no longer met the increased requirements of the textile industry, it was expanded in 1912 to become a technical college for the textile and clothing industry . For this, a new building was built from 1909 to 1914 under the direction of Ludwig Hoffmann on Warschauer Platz in Berlin-Friedrichshain , which could only be occupied in 1919 due to the First World War . On July 1, 1918, Ernst Flemming was appointed director, who previously taught as a university professor at the Higher Web School and the Higher Technical College for the Textile and Clothing Industry.
The technical school later became the textile and fashion school of the city of Berlin , then the engineering school for clothing technology and from 1990 part of the engineering college Berlin . In 1994 the entire area of clothing technology was taken over by the FHTW. Today, in addition to fashion design, the design department at HTW Berlin includes several design and cultural courses, for example communication, industrial or game design. Since the summer of 2006, the department has been located in the Oberschöneweide district on the Wilhelminenhof campus , in the renovated and converted halls of the AEG's former Oberspree cable works .
Engineering University Berlin
The engineering school for mechanical engineering , electrical engineering and construction , which was founded in 1948 and later the engineering school for mechanical and electrical engineering , was set up in a former community school in the Victoriastadt in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The HTW later (until 2009) used their building at Marktstrasse 9-12, see below. u .: locations . In 1988 there was a merger with the Berlin School of Engineering . Today, the Department of Energy and Information at HTW Berlin includes electrical engineering and several information and technology courses, for example computer engineering (technical informatics), communications engineering or applied automation. Since summer 2009, the department has been located in the Oberschöneweide district on the Wilhelminenhof campus, in renovated and converted buildings and new buildings on the site of the AEG's former Oberspree cable works.
University of Economics (HfÖ)
On October 4, 1950, in the building of the former Kant-Gymnasium on Treskowallee in Berlin-Karlshorst, the College of Plan Economics was opened, which was renamed the College of Economics (HfÖ) in 1954 and was given the additional name Bruno Leuschner in 1972 .
The buildings erected in 1913–1914 were expanded in 1919–1920 and rebuilt in 1950. Together with the auditorium maximum built in the rear area in 1955, they are listed as historical monuments. On October 1st, 1991 the HfÖ was dissolved and most of the staff and professors were dismissed. The University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Economics was founded in its place. Today there are no professors from the former HfÖ in the service of HTW Berlin.
University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Business (FHTW) since 1990
On October 1, 1991, the Berlin School of Engineering and the HfÖ merged with the University of Applied Sciences for Technology and Economics in foundation (FHTW Berlin) along with all properties in Berlin. This is the reason for the university's campuses, which are distributed throughout the city. The founding team were founding rector Jürgen Tippe , prorector Rainer Knigge and Dieter Markusch. In 1993 Jürgen Tippe decided to leave the FHTW, and the previous prorector Rainer Knigge was elected President of the FHTW Berlin in 1994. On April 1, 1994, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (FHTW) became legally independent. The University of Applied Sciences of Deutsche Telekom Berlin was integrated into the FHTW Berlin in 1996. In the same year, the AStA accused the then President of the FHTW Berlin, Rainer Knigge, of illegal transactions, which the Berlin House of Representatives ultimately dealt with .
On July 3, 1998, Helmut Schmidt was elected President of the FHTW Berlin. The previously incumbent President Rainer Knigge stood for election, but was not re-elected, which was probably due to the documentation on the Knigge case published a few days before the election. This dealt with the allegations expressed in 1996 in detail and was drawn up by former and active members of the AStA of the FHTW Berlin on behalf of the StuPa of the FHTW Berlin.
On October 1, 2002, Herbert Grüner followed as President , because Helmut Schmidt had moved to Brandenburg an der Havel as Lord Mayor . In 2004 the FHTW Berlin celebrated its tenth anniversary with a ten jump , during which various events took place within the university at 10 a.m. on ten days.
In 2006 Michael Heine became President of the FHTW Berlin. During his presidency, the Berlin University of Applied Sciences was renamed the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) on April 1, 2009 . It still has the status of a technical college.
The economist Klaus Semlinger was President from 2014 to 2019 (previously Vice President for Teaching since 2002). On April 1, 2019, the computer scientist Carsten Busch took office.
Locations
The University of Technology and Business has only had two locations since 2010:
- Campus Treskowallee, Treskowallee 8, 10318 Berlin-Karlshorst ( location )
- Campus Wilhelminenhof, Wilhelminenhofstraße 75A, 12459 Berlin-Oberschöneweide ( location )
Until the summer of 2009, HTW Berlin (then still FHTW) was spread over five locations in Berlin. The locations in Berlin-Lichtenberg ( Allee der Kosmonauten 20-22), Blankenburg (Blankenburger Pflasterweg 102) and Rummelsburg ( Marktstrasse 9) have been closed since October 2009 . As part of the move, the designers' campus at Warschauer Platz (Rummelsburg) was closed and relocated to the Wilhelminenhof campus in Oberschöneweide. The monument ensemble in Marktstrasse became the property of the German Youth Hostel Association , which by 2016 had developed from the complex "the largest youth hostel in Berlin".
