Josmer "Jozy" Volmy Altidore (born November 6, 1989 in Livingston , New Jersey ) is an American football player . The striker has played for Toronto FC since January 2015 .

Career

youth

Altidore was born in Livingston , New Jersey . He spent most of his youth in Boca Raton , Florida , and attended Boca Prep International School, where he was an active member of the school team. His parents, Joseph and Giselle, are from Haiti . In addition to school, he was also active in the local soccer teams GBYSA and Boca Juniors Soccer Club.

While still at school he switched, due to his above-average talent, to the U17 support program of the US American Football Association , which he completed at the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton , Florida.

New York Red Bulls

In the 2006 MLS SuperDraft, he was selected as 17th pick by the New York Red Bulls. Altidore spent most of his first season in Florida to graduate from high school.

He played his first game for the Red Bulls on August 23, 2006. Altidore was substituted on in the US Open Cup game against DC United . He scored his first goal on September 16, 2006, when he was 16 years old. Although he wasn't with the team for most of the season, he managed to score three goals in seven games. He also gained great popularity with fans. Today he is still the youngest player to score in the MLS play-offs.

Villarreal CF

On June 4, 2008, Major League Soccer and the New York Red Bulls agreed to sell Altidore to the Spanish first division club Villarreal . The Spaniards paid a transfer fee of 7.4 million euros (10 million dollars ), which is the highest transfer fee to date for a player from the MLS. On June 11, 2008 Altidore signed his contract and made his debut in the Primera División on September 14, 2008. In the game against Athletic Bilbao he scored his first goal for Villarreal, which was also the first of an American in the Spanish first division.

Deportivo Xerez

In the winter break of the 2008/09 season he was loaned to the second division club Deportivo Xerez until the end of the season. He should gain more match practice there and get to know the Spanish culture better.

On April 16, 2009, he was operated on on his toenail. He was injured for over a month and never played a game for Xerez.

Hull City

On August 5, 2009, Altidore's loan move to the English Premier League club Hull City was announced. The contract includes a purchase option, according to which Altidore can move to the English club as a fixed entry at the end of the season for a transfer fee of 6.5 million pounds .

On August 22, Altidore made his debut at Hull City when he came on in the home game against Bolton Wanderers in the 60th minute for Caleb Folan and only a minute later made the template for the 1-0 winner by Kamel Ghilas . Altidore made his first league goal on February 6th. The opponents in this game were Manchester City and Altidore scored the 1-0 opening goal. He had previously scored his first goal for Hull City in the form of a free kick in the Carling Cup .

Bursaspor

The first half of the 2010/11 season he played again for Villarreal, before he was loaned to Bursaspor on January 31, 2011 for six months. There he scored his first goal in the Süper Lig on April 8, 2011 . In total, he was used for Bursaspor twelve times and scored one goal.

AZ Alkmaar

On July 15, Altidore moved for a fee of 1.5 million euros to AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie , where he made his debut on August 7, 2011 in the game against PSV Eindhoven , where he came on in the second half and shortly afterwards to 3-1 final score met. On May 9, 2013, he was with Alkmaar in the cup final and scored the goal of the 2-0 lead in the 2-1 win against PSV.

Sunderland AFC

In November 2007 Josmer Altidore played his first full international match for the USA .

He is also a member of the United States U-20 national team. He scored one goal in the 6-1 victory over Poland in the group stage of the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup . In the last group game against Brazil, he scored both goals in the sensational US victory. Despite the United States' elimination in the quarter-finals against Austria 2-1, Altidore scored four World Cup goals. Since then, several top international clubs have expressed interest in him.

On February 6, 2008 Altidore played his third A international match against Mexico , scoring his first international goal for the A selection. On January 19, he was substituted for Sweden and before that he played against South Africa .

Altidore took part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , but there was eliminated the U-23 US selection in the group with four points. The Netherlands and Nigeria have qualified for the quarter-finals. Altidore was able to score a goal in this tournament. He usually only played one half of the three games. With a hat-trick in the national team's 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago , Altidore is now the youngest American to have scored a hat-trick in an international soccer match.

At the Confed Cup 2009 in South Africa, Altidore finished second with the United States. A year later he was on the pitch at every US game at the 2010 World Cup .

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 he was one of the team's key players. He scored the first goal for the USA in this tournament and secured a place in the quarter-finals with his goal against Guadeloupe . There he injured himself, however, and could no longer participate in the rest of the tournament. Without Altidore, the US team reached the final, where, as in 2009, they lost to Mexico . He was not nominated for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup , which the USA won. In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup , he made 13 appearances and scored four goals. At the World Cup, however, he only had a 23-minute short stint in the 2-1 win against Ghana . At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 he only had two appearances in the group stage. His team then failed in the semifinals to Jamaica and then lost the game for 3rd place on penalties against Panama. As the 2013 winners, the Americans had to play the 2015 winners against Mexico in a playoff game for the CONCACAF starting place at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup . In this game he was used, but lost with his team 2: 3 after extra time. Altidore was substituted after 98 minutes and Bobby Wood , who was substituted on for him , scored the interim equalizer to make it 2-2 ten minutes after being substituted on.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , he made 15 appearances and was the top scorer of his team with eight goals and the second top scorer in CONCACAF. But he couldn't prevent his team from missing the World Cup for the first time since 1986. In the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup played between the qualifiers , he made three appearances and scored two goals, including the first goal in the 2-1 final win over Jamaica. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 he made four appearances and scored the goal of the 1-0 win against Panama in the last group game. He was also used in the final, which was lost 1-0 to Mexico. This is his last appearance for the national team so far.

Altidore represented Adidas as an advertising medium in the “Impossible is Nothing” campaign and was featured on the cover of EA Sports' North American version of FIFA 08 .

In November 2006 he visited Haiti for six days with Seth Stammler and Jerrod Laventure . The three football players were there with musician Wyclef Jean to act as ambassadors for his charity, Yéle Haiti . Jean also wore the Altidore jersey for his appearance during the halftime show of the Red Bull Arena inaugural game.

After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, he got involved with Yéle Haiti and raised funds for the organization. He spoke to CNN about his family members living in Haiti and asked for more donations.

Altidore is in a relationship with the American tennis player Sloane Stephens . The couple got engaged at the end of April 2019.
