Kocaeli is a province in northwestern Turkey .

Kocaeli borders the metropolis of Istanbul in the west, the Black Sea in the north, Sakarya in the east and the Sea of ​​Marmara , which forms the Gulf of İzmit here, in the southwest . The center is İzmit , formerly also known officially as Kocaeli.

The province of Kocaeli is industrialized above average and has the highest gross national product per capita in Turkey. Over 1.8 million people live in it.

structure

Kocaeli has been a large city (Büyükşehir belediyesi) with its own (upper) mayor (Büyükşehir belediye başkanı) since 1993. After an administrative reform in 2014, all state subdistricts of the province ( İlçe ) are organized as member municipalities ( Belediye ) of the metropolitan municipality.
