The Herne thermal power station is a coal-fired power station owned by Steag . It is located in Baukau , a district of Herne ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
history
In 1962/63 the first two power plant blocks with an output of approx. 150 MW each were built. Block 3 with 280 MW was added in 1966 (converted to district heating in 1987). Unit 3 had an efficiency of only 30 percent. In 1988 the power plant was retrofitted with a flue gas desulphurisation system .
In 1989 a fourth power plant block with 449 MW electrical output was built; this block can also provide district heating if required. In connection with this new building, the 300 meter high chimney and the large cooling tower (130 m) were built in 1984, which currently shape the image of the power plant. This new chimney replaced three old chimneys that were subsequently demolished. The oldest block 1 was shut down in 2000. Unit 2 followed in 2014 and Unit 3 in June 2017. Currently, only Unit 4 with a capacity of 449 MWel is in operation.
Technical specifications
The four original power plant blocks together had an electrical output of 950 megawatts . With Block 4, 449 MW of electrical power are still in operation.
In 2008 the power plant produced approx. 5.2 billion kWh of electricity (energy requirement of approx. 1.3 million households) and 0.8 billion kWh of district heating , which were fed into the district heating network of the Ruhr district heating network.
The coal consumption in 2008 was about 2.0 million tons. The CO 2 emissions this year totaled loud European Pollutant Emission Register (EPER 2004) to 4,510,000 tons.
Due to the changed conditions on the electricity market as a result of the energy transition, electricity production decreased to 2,501 GWh in 2011 (5,200 GWh in 2008). As a result of the reduced electricity production, the consumption of hard coal also decreased from approx. 2,000,000 tons (year 2008) to approx. 961,923 (year 2011).

The coal is supplied via the Rhine-Herne Canal , from which the required cooling water is taken and reintroduced. In 2008 about 250 employees worked in the power plant. The power plant is also a location on the “Large-scale chemistry and energy” themed route on the Industrial Culture Route .
Planning
Formerly planned coal-fired power station unit 5
In autumn 2006, Steag announced that it would build a fifth power plant block with municipal partners with an output of 750 MW and a net efficiency of 45%. Construction of the € 800 million project was scheduled to begin in summer 2008; the unit was scheduled to go into operation in autumn 2011. The "Herne 5" project envisaged the construction of a 180 m high cooling tower through which the flue gases should also be discharged (clean gas discharge), so the construction of a separate chimney would not have been necessary. 50 new jobs would have been created for the operation of Block 5.
The reason given by the operator at the time, Evonik, was the proposal of the EU Commission that, as part of emissions trading, trading in carbon dioxide certificates should be expanded to include new plants from 2012. The economic crisis in 2009 and the low electricity wholesale price for years were probably other factors that made the investment appear questionable.
As of 2018, the plans for this block have been abandoned due to the unprofitable business prospects for coal-fired power plants. Instead, a gas power plant is to be built (see below).
Gas and steam power plant
Steag is planning to build a gas-fired combined cycle power plant unit at the site , which will be operated in combined heat and power . A 22-kilometer gas pipeline is to be built between Datteln and Herne for the gas supply. The block, known as Herne 6, should have an electrical output of 650 MW and an additional 400 MW of district heating. The investment costs are estimated at 350 to 400 million euros. The final investment decision is to be made in 2019, and if the decision is positive, the block will be operational by mid-2022. Siemens was commissioned to build the plant, which will build a CHP plant based on the SGT5-8000H . At the beginning of 2019, construction work began with the preparation of the property. With the commissioning of the new gas and steam power plant, planned by March 2022, the coal-fired Unit IV is to be shut down.
Emissions
Coal-fired power plants are criticized for their pollutant emissions. Even after the installation of filter systems in the 1980s, which largely desulfurized the exhaust gases, coal-fired power plants continued to emit relevant quantities of sulfur dioxide . In addition, nitrogen oxides , which are harmful to the environment and health, as well as fine dusts that are harmful to health , the heavy metals and PAHs contained therein enter the environment. In Germany, the energy industry contributed 71% (6.571 tons) to total mercury emissions in 2010 .
The pollutant emissions of all large coal-fired power plants and industrial plants are published in the European Pollutant Emissions Register (via the German portal www.Thru.de).
