Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life is a 2003 adventure film directed by Jan de Bont and starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role of Lara Croft . It is a continuation of the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider , which is also based on the Tomb Raider computer game series .

In an earthquake in Greece of sunken in the sea is Luna - Temple of Alexander the Great exposed. For the ruler, this temple served as a second, secret treasury next to the library of Alexandria . During a dive there, the grave robber Lara Croft discovers a mysterious sphere. But just as she is about to pocket the bullet, armed men from a mercenary force appear and steal the valuable booty.
Lara was able to photograph part of the sphere beforehand and realizes that it represents a kind of treasure map. But the fragment is not enough to solve the riddle. It looks like she and her helpers Bryce and Hillary have to search the entire Greek mythology for bullets. But a few days later agents Stevens and Calloway from MI6 appear at Croft's estate in England , and the adventurer learns the truth: the bullet that Alexander once brought from India to Greece is the signpost to Pandora's box . According to tradition, this vessel contains all evils and diseases. It is located in an unknown place known as the " cradle of mankind ". If the rifle falls into the wrong hands, it can become a devastating weapon and cause untold damage.
This danger is very real now. Because the unscrupulous scientist Dr. Jonathan Reiss tries to get hold of the ball. Since Pandora's box has worse consequences than any known disease when misused, he wants to wipe out humanity with it - except for a few chosen people, for whom he develops an antidote . Lara has to get back the bullet that Reiss' mercenaries stole from her as soon as possible.
To do this, she first has to track down Chen Lo, the head of a Chinese criminal syndicate . For this difficult task, she chooses Terry Sheridan as her partner. The former Royal Marines soldier is in prison in Kazakhstan as a traitor . However, Lara can persuade MI6 to release him and offer him a new identity in case of success. Lara and Terry, who used to be lovers for five months, find the gang high in the mountains. You are initially captured, but can break free after a dangerous fight. Croft snatches a medal from her opponent , which is needed to decipher the ball. The medal shows a woman with a flute and some wavy lines. Lara realizes that it is sound waves and sends a photo of the medal to her helper, Bryce. The computer expert should find out the right tones. However, they do not own the sphere itself. This has now been brought to Shanghai . There Reiss picks up the ball with a helicopter. At the last moment, Lara succeeds in attaching a tracking device to the box in which the ball is being transported.
The transmitter's signal takes you to the heart of Hong Kong's city center . Reiss has set up a modern laboratory in what appears to be an empty office space in a shopping center . Computers there are currently working on decoding the sphere. With Terry's help, Lara can get hold of the ball. They escape their opponents by jumping off the building wearing wingsuits and landing on a ship. There the attractive adventurer seduces her partner, but only to tie him to the bed. Lara no longer trusts Terry and continues on her own.
She borrows a Chinese family's satellite television set to connect to Bryce with her technical equipment. In the meantime, the computer geek has figured out the tones needed to decipher the sphere. Lara sends him the rest of the pictures of the ball and receives an audio file in return . The sound waves make the ball glow. Lara sees vivid images from Africa and recognizes Kilimanjaro . So there is the mysterious cradle of life. Lara doesn't know, however, that Reiss and his mercenary Sean broke into their property in England and overheard the conversation.
Lara travels to Kenya where she meets her old friend Kosa. The African leads them to a local tribe. She learns that the rifle is hidden in a dangerous place. Hell must be crossed on the way. No one has yet returned alive from this place. Lara doesn't let that put her off. Together with Kosa and twenty warriors, she is on her way when suddenly Reiss and his helpers appear in helicopters and a shooting begins. To protect her friends, Lara agrees to lead Reiss to Pandora's box. Together they enter the shadow world. There voracious monsters, the so-called shadow guards, come to life and devour some of Reiss' people. With the help of the ball, Lara opens the entrance to the cradle of life, where she and Reiss find Pandora's box floating in a lake of "black tears", a caustic liquid. Croft overpowers Reiss, who finds his death in the caustic liquid, while the suddenly appearing Terry fishes the rifle out of the lake. Lara and her partner are on the verge of reconciliation, but then Terry wants to take the can. However, since Lara knows what misfortune this would cause, she shoots him and sinks the rifle in the lake of tears. This avoids the danger.

The film was not allowed to be published in China because it portrayed the country as chaotic, without a government and infiltrated by secret organizations.

After the film was released, Angelina Jolie stated that she was not interested in playing the title role in another sequel.
In late January 2009, Warner Brothers announced that they had started developing a "Tomb Raider" reboot with Dan Lin . The new film is said to have little in common with the two predecessors "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (2001) and "Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life" (2003), in which Angelina Jolie played the title role. In the restart, the origin of the character Lara Croft as well as her mission, her interests and the opponents should be represented anew.
The plot of the film was still open at this point, as the project was in a very early phase at the end of January 2009. Who should succeed Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft was also still unknown and should only be decided after the scriptwriters and the director have been determined.
