The men's hammer throw at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place in Helsinki , Finland on August 8 and 9, 1983 .

33 athletes from 19 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the Olympic runner-up in 1980 , third in the European Championship in 1982 and world record holder Sergei Litvinow from the Soviet Union with 82.68 m. Silver went to 80.94 meters to his compatriot Yuri Sjedych , the two-time Olympic champion ( 1976 / 1980 ) and two-time European champion ( 1978 / 1982 ). The bronze medal went to Zdzisław Kwaśny from Poland with 79.42 m.

The qualification distance was at least 73.50 m in order to move directly into the final. Eleven athletes passed this mark or threw on, they are highlighted in light blue. Another thrower (highlighted in light green) - the number of athletes should be at least twelve - qualified with the next best distance for the final on the following day.
