The women's 200-meter run at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 was held on August 17 and 19, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .
World Champion was the Jamaican Merlene Ottey , the twice World Cup -Bronze ( 1987 /1991), three bronze medals at the Olympic Games ( 1980 / 1984 /1992) and one World Cup -Silver ( 1983 had won). In addition, she had won bronze over 100 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1987 and 1991 World Championships . She was finally able to bring a single gold medal to her collection after winning relay gold in 1991 with the Jamaica team. Here in Stuttgart she had also finished second over 100 meters three days earlier.
The vice world champion over 100 and 200 meters from 1991 and Olympic champion from 1992 over 200 meters and 4 × 100 meters Gwen Torrence , who had also won Olympic silver over 4 × 400 meters in 1992, was again vice world champion. Here in Stuttgart she won more medals with gold over 4 × 400 meters, silver and 4 × 100 meters after she had already won bronze over 100 meters.
The Russian Irina Priwalowa , who started in 1992 for the United Team of the Commonwealth of Independent States and finished third over 100 meters, now came third over 200 meters. On the final day, she also won gold with her country's 4 x 100 meter relay.
