The women's 100-meter run at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held on August 2 and 3, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
The world champion was the American Marion Jones , who won a second gold medal on the final day with the 4 x 100 meter relay of her country. The second place went to the two-time European Vice Champion of 1994 ( 100 / 200m ) Zhanna Pintussewytsch from the Ukraine , which the race over 200 meters decided five days later for themselves. It was started in 1994 under its then name Shanna Tarnopolskaya. Bronze went to Savatheda Fynes , Bahamas , who won Olympic silver in their country's 4 x 100 meter relay in 1996 .

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships.
The US world champion Marion Jones missed the record in the final by only a hundredth of a second and thus set a new world high for the year.

- 11.30 s - Lucrécia Jardim ( Portugal ), 4th lead on August 2nd (wind: +0.1 m / s)
- 10.90 s - Shanna Pintusevich ( Ukraine ), 1st quarter-finals on August 2nd (wind: +0.7 m / s)
- 10.85 s - Shanna Pintusevich (Ukraine), final on August 3rd (wind: +0.4 m / s)
