List of North Sea fish
There are around 250 species of fish in the North Sea , which are listed in the following list. Among them are about 40 cartilaginous fish , 3 are jawless , the rest are bony fish .
The areas close to the shore are mainly inhabited by young flatfish and haddock fish. In shallow water between 10 and 100 meters live herring , sprat , mackerel , pollack , Norway pout and horse mackerel pelagic , cod , haddock, whiting , sand eel and the dogfish Benthopelagic (in free water but close to the seabed). Pronounced bottom dwellers are the flatfish, the monkfish , the striped sea wolf , the gurnards and the rays . Some deep-sea fish are only found in the far north of the North Sea on the edge of the European continental shelf and in the Norwegian channel , including Vahl's wolffish , the silver hatchet , lanternfish , the round-nosed grenadier and the tusk . Important fish food animals are the copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Temora longicornis , which dominate the zooplankton.
