Marcel Müller (born July 10, 1988 in Berlin (West) ) is a German ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Cologne Sharks from the DEL since 2018 .

Career

Marcel Müller began his career in the junior division of the BSC Prussia . He later switched to the young eagles Mannheim , for whom he played from 2003 to 2005 in the German junior league. For the 2005/06 season the striker moved back to his hometown to the Eisbären Berlin , where he was mainly active in the DEL for two years . In 2006, the left-handed shooter won the German championship with the capital city and finally signed a two-year contract with league rivals Kölner Haie in the summer of 2007 . With the Domstadt team, Müller reached the play-off final again in the 2007/08 season , but failed there with the Haien at his ex-club from Berlin. In the 2009/10 season he ran again for the Domstadt team and was the second best scorer with 56 points behind Ivan Ciernik and the best goal preparer of his team with 32 assists.

In July 2010, Müller signed an NHL entry contract for two years with the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he completed his first appearance in the game against the Calgary Flames on January 15, 2011 . Marcel Müller is the first native of Berlin to play in the NHL . He spent the summer of 2011 at the Berlin inline skate hockey club Berlin Buffalos in the 1st Bundesliga of the ISHD . In the 2011/2012 season he reached the AHL final with the Toronto Marlies , which was lost. Overall, during his time in North America, he was certified that he was not able to use his full potential - but Müller also had to fight injuries in both seasons, which he mainly played with the Marlies in the AHL . In July he signed a contract with MODO Hockey in the Swedish Elitserien .

From June 2013 Müller was again under contract with the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League . In October 2014 he was released with immediate effect, after which he was signed on November 21, 2014 by the Krefeld Penguins , also from the DEL , provisionally until the end of the 2014/2015 season . With the penguins he was able to score 35 points in the remaining 32 match days of the 2014/15 season , making him the second best scorer behind Daniel Pietta at the end of the season and the team's top scorer with 19 goals.

In April 2015, the Hamburg Freezers announced the commitment of Müller for the 2015/16 season , he received a contract until the end of the 2017/18 season. Acted as Hamburg's most important transfer, it could not meet expectations with 8 goals this season , in a 2015/16 season that was generally disappointing for the Freezers . After the owners of Hamburg Freezers announced the withdrawal of the club from gaming operations in May 2016, Müller's original three-year contract in the Hanseatic city was also prematurely terminated.

He then returned to the penguins in Krefeld. In the 2016/17 season he was again the second best scorer of his team behind Daniel Pietta with 37 points, but the actual goal of the season, participation in the play-off games, was missed. In mid-February 2017, he signed a contract with Linköpings HC, a club from the highest Swedish ice hockey league, SHL, until the end of the 2016/17 season .

Since the 2017/18 season , Müller has been active again at the traditional Lower Rhine club. Although the season was not successful for the Seidenstädter , he was the second best scorer in the league with 52 points in the main round behind Keith Aucoin and the club's top scorer with 24 goals. After the Krefeld arithmetically could no longer reach the playoffs, he was loaned for the remaining games of the season to Leksands IF from the second highest Swedish league Allsvenskan . Here he was in a total of 15 games (9 points) qualify for the rise of games, however, the traditional club defeated in direct comparison to the penultimate of the highest league SHL , which is also in the province of Dalarna resident Mora IK .

For the 2018/19 season, Marcel Müller moved back to the Rhenish league rivals from Cologne. However, due to cartilage damage that he sustained in an international match against France in April 2018, he was unable to play a single game this season and he was even threatened with the end of his career because his patellar tendon became infected. It was not until October 11, 2019 that Müller was able to play a game again and was voted Player of the Month for November.

International

In the junior division, Müller initially took part in the U18 World Cup 2006 in the top division with the German U18 team. In the following year he also played with the German U20 national team in the World Cup in the top division , but had to accept relegation there. So he played in 2008 in Division I, where immediate promotion was achieved.

After being used for the first time in the men's national team in the 2007/08 season , Müller was nominated for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and later that year he also took part in the World Cup in his own country. After he was also on the ice at the 2011 World Cup , he played in the Olympic qualification for the Winter Games in Sochi in February 2013 . Since then, he has still played in friendly matches or at the Germany Cup , but was no longer nominated for world championships.
