Sørlandsbanen to Sira
Museum train on the Setesdalsbane at Paulen bro , 23 July 2003

The Setesdalsbane is a narrow-gauge railway line in Norway that originally ran between Kristiansand and Byglandsfjord in Setesdal . The route was 78 km long. It was built in the Cape Gauge ( gauge 1067 mm). Part of the route (20 km) was re-gauged in 1938, most of it closed in 1962, and a small part (8 km) was preserved as a museum railway. This train is a tourist attraction in Sørlandet .

history

The Setesdalsbane was opened between Kristiansand and Hægeland on November 26th, 1895, the remaining route to Byglandsfjord followed on November 27th, 1896. The stations along the line were Mosby , Vennesla , Grovane , Iveland and Hægeland , among others . One of the first traffic managers on the line was the Norwegian railway engineer Lars Lysgaard from 1896 .

The railway line was part of the transport system in Setesdal. The railway station in Byglandsfjord was the end of the line. From there, travelers could take the steamship Bjoren (now a tourist attraction) to Bygland and on to Ose . From Ose there was first a connection with horses to the upper valley, later a public bus went. When the road around Fånefjell was built, the bus ran along the fjord to Byglandsfjord.

The Byglandsfjord station is today Heritage ( Norwegian culture Minne ).

Re-gauging

In the course of the construction of the Sørlandsbane , Grovane became the new terminus for the Setesdalsbane . The remaining 20 kilometers of the route to Kristiansand were converted to standard gauge and reopened on May 14, 1938.

Shutdown

The Setesdalsbane was closed on September 1, 1962 and the line between Byglandsfjord and Beihølen was dismantled.

Grovane – Røyknes Museum Railway

The six-kilometer stretch between Beihølen and Grovane was preserved thanks to the efforts of the members of the Setesdalsbanens Hobbyklubb , founded in 1964 . The association organized the operation as a museum railway . A stretch of two kilometers to Røyknes was restored and reopened on September 5, 2004. The trains are now traveling the eight kilometer stretch between Grovane and Røyknes. Setesdalbanen has been a separate department of the Vest-Agder Museum IKS since January 1st, 2006 .

Museum vehicles

Four steam locomotives from the years between 1894 and 1902 have been preserved, as well as a number of passenger and freight cars .

Individual evidence

  1. In Norwegian , the ending "-en" for nouns is a definite article . Therefore, the correct designation in German texts is either “Setesdalsbanen” or “die Setesdalsbane”.
