The National Park Mu Ko Ranong ( Thai : อุทยานแห่งชาติ หมู่ เกาะ ระนอง - Ranong Archipelago , until 2005: National Park Mu Ko Phayam , อุทยานแห่งชาติ หมู่ เกาะ พยาม ) is a marine national park in the Andaman Sea in the southern region of Thailand .

The 347 km² park has been registered as a national park since October 31, 2000 .

Geography and ecosystems

The national park is located in the municipalities ( tambon ) Ko Phayam ( ตำบล เกาะ พยาม ), Rat Krut ( ตำบล ราช กรูด ), Ngao ( ตำบล ห งาว ) and Paknam ( ตำบล ปากน้ำ ) of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Ranong ( อำเภอ เมือง ระนอง ). To the north it borders the Tanintharyi Division of Myanmar .

The park consists of 15 small and large islands and part of the coastal strip.

  • Belong to the larger islands
    • Ko Phayam ( เกาะ พยาม ) - about 10 kilometers off the coast, inside with extensive coconut and cashew tree plantations; the cashew nuts grown here for export are a registered product of the OTOP program. On the wide, gently sloping sandy beaches in the west and south of the island, some resorts and bungalow hotels offer overnight accommodation for tourists seeking tranquility.
    • Ko Chang ( เกาะ ช้าง ) - largest island in the archipelago. It is not to be confused with the island of the same name Ko Chang in the province of Trat in eastern Thailand.
  • The interior of the smaller islands in the open sea are covered with rainforest , and around the islands there are coral reefs . This is:
    • Ko Thalu ( เกาะ ทะลุ ) - with a "natural rock bridge" ( สะพาน หิน ธรรมชาติ - Saphan Hin ), which connects two parts of the island,
    • Ko Fai Mai ( Fire Island , เกาะ ไฟ ไหม้ ) - a unique island that has no sand, but a "rock beach" ( หาด หิน งาม - Hat Hin Ngam ) consisting of small and large pebbles ,
    • Ko Song Phi Nong ( เกาะ สองพี่น้อง ),
    • Ko Kham ( เกาะ ขาม ). It is not to be confused with the island of the same name Ko Kham in the province of Trat in eastern Thailand.
    • Ko Tha Krut ( Eye of Garuda Island , เกาะ ตา ครุฑ ).
  • Smaller islands near the mainland are covered with mangroves in the east and sandy beaches in the west. This includes, for example
    • Ko Son ( pine island , เกาะ สน ),
  • The areas that are on the mainland on the coast are covered with dense swamp and mangrove forests. On the west coast there are long, fine sandy beaches that sometimes border on beach forests. These areas are also called islands , as they are partly surrounded by numerous canals like islands. The areas close to or on the mainland include
    • Ko Yio ( เกาะ ยิว ),
    • Ko Bang Chak ( เกาะ บางจาก ),
    • Ko Sai Dam ( Black Sand Island , เกาะ ทราย ดำ ).
