history

Newburgh was organized as a town on February 15, 1819. Previously the area was known as Township No. 2, First Range North of Waldo Patent (T2 R1 NWP) or Newberg or Newburg .

The town of Newburgh was granted the Waldo patent and was sold to Benjamin Bussey by General Henry Knox , who through his wife, daughter of Samuel Waldo , inherited most of the patent, to Benjamin Bussey , who owned the entire property until his death uninhabited land. His conditions for settling the area were so high that settlers were slow to arrive. Only after his death in 1842 were more favorable conditions offered and the settlement was able to grow.

In 1823 and 1832, land was given to neighboring Hampden.
