Olimpijski
The sports complex Olimpijski ( Russian Спортивный комплекс "Олимпийский" ) is a multifunctional hall in the Russian capital Moscow . It is also known as the Moscow Olympic Hall .
General
The complex was established in July 1980 as one of the main venues for the XXII. Summer Olympics completed after three years of construction. He replaced the Burewestnik Stadium, which was built in its place in 1905 .
The sports complex consists of two buildings: In addition to the 33,000 m² main arena, which is up to 224 meters in diameter and can accommodate up to 80,000 people at the same time, it also includes the adjacent indoor pool, which is used both for water sports competitions and as a public pool. The main arena building contains several separate halls, the largest of which is the central sports hall with a length of 126 meters, a width of 90 meters and seating for 35,000 spectators.
The total area of the complex, including the arena and the indoor swimming pool, is almost 55,000 m². The two buildings are located in the north of Moscow city center, not far from the Prospekt Mira arterial road (in German "Prospect of Peace", also known as the M8 trunk road ) and two metro stations ( Prospekt Mira of the "orange line" and the ring-road station of the same name ).
When it was completed, Olimpijski was regarded as a masterpiece of Soviet architecture due to its size and the most modern technologies used in the construction of the time - including the 5 mm thick steel roof shell . The main arena of the Olimpijski is still considered to be the largest indoor sports arena in Europe. The Olimpijski sports complex, including the indoor pool, is designed as a multifunctional sports facility and can therefore host competitions in 22 Olympic sports.
