As in Athens four years ago, the competition at these games was held without preliminary heats.

The clear favorite was the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele. He had won all the major championships in recent years, he was Olympic champion in 2004 and world champion in 2005 and 2007 . He was also the holder of the world record . Bekeles strongest competitor was his compatriot Sileshi Sihine, who had finished second in each of the mentioned races. Other serious candidates for top positions all came from Africa. There were Kenyan WM -Third Martin Mathathi, Zersenay Tadese from Eritrea as WM -Vierter of 2007 World Cup -Sechster of 2005 Olympic fourth from 2004 and the third Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie, who had dominated this track for much of the 1990s and was last Olympic champion in 2000 in Sydney . However, he no longer had the strength of his very big time.

The first thousand meters - 2: 50.85 min - in this final were not particularly fast, but there was not too much loitering. The large field remained closed together. The second kilometer, on the other hand, was fast with 2: 36.47 minutes, accordingly the athletes ran one behind the other like on a long string. It remained very fast on the next 1000 meter section, but the field was still largely closed. It stayed that way for now, because it slowed down a bit. Up to the seventh kilometer, the 1000 meter times were above the 2:40 mark. On the last three kilometers it gradually got faster again and so more and more runners fell behind as the distance increased. Two kilometers from the finish, a seven-man leading group remained in the lead with Zersenay Tadese, Kogo, his compatriots Moses Ndiema Masai and Martin Irungu Mathathi, and the Ethiopians Bekele, Sileshi and Gebrselassie. The pace remained high now, but even at the 9000 meter mark, these seven runners were still together in front. At the beginning of the final lap, Bekele attacked and resolutely took the lead. Sileshi and Gebrselassie made an Ethiopian three-way tour perfect. But Kogo and Masai now passed Gebrselassie. At the very front, the two Ethiopians were once again unbeatable. Kenenisa Bekele was the second Olympic champion in the 10,000 meter distance, behind him Sileshi Sihine won silver. It was very close in the battle for bronze. Masai almost reached the declining Kogo with the last steps. But Micah Kipkemboi Kogo was able to save his third place by a razor thin layer and won bronze ahead of his fellow countryman Moses Ndiema Masai. Zersenay Tadese was fifth ahead of Haile Gebrselassie. Bekele's final lap, which he covered in 53.5 seconds, was again remarkable. This time was identical to the final lap of the 1500-meter Olympic champion Abel Kiprop and Bekeles own last lap in the later 5000-meter race .

In the first ten places there were only African runners and Selim Bayrak, who started eleventh for Turkey, was of Ethiopian origin. Behind Kidane Tadese from Eritrea followed in thirteenth place with the US-American Galen Rupp, the first non-African athlete.

For the fourth time in a row there was the same run-in on the first two places at major events: Kenenisa Bekele in front of his compatriot Sileshi Sihine.

Kenenisa Bekeles victory was the fourth Olympic victory in a row by an Ethiopian over 10,000 meters .

For the first time, the 10,000 meter runners stayed in the first four places below the current Olympic record .
